Nebraska has its new athletic director.

Less than a month after the university moved on from Shawn Eichorst, Nebraska announced Sunday it has hired Bill Moos away from Washington State to be its AD. Moos, 66, has agreed to a five-year contract, the school said. His base annual salary is $1 million, plus incentives.

His first day on the job will be Oct. 23.

“Nebraska has secured a proven winner in Bill Moos to lead Husker Athletics into a new era of excellence,” said Chancellor Ronnie Green. “It was clear that Bill stood out in a very competitive, tremendously gifted pool of candidates, not only because of his proven ability to lead programs to greatness, but because of his reputation for integrity in building and leading those programs.”

Moos, a Washington State alum and three-year letterman in football, returned to his alma mater as athletic director in 2010. Before his tenure at Washington State, Moos, 66, was the athletic director at Oregon from 1995 to 2007 and Montana from 1990 to 1995. He began working in collegiate athletics at Washington State in 1982, where he worked in various roles before taking the Montana job.

“To lead one of the most storied and successful athletic programs in the nation is a true honor,” Moos said. “Nebraska is a very special place, known far and wide for its phenomenal fans, for doing things the right way, for supporting its students, honoring its athletic legacy and maintaining excellence in athletics success across the board. I am proud to help build upon these Husker traditions.”

Moos hired Mike Leach to rebuild a downtrodden Wazzu football program in 2012 and could be tasked to do the same at Nebraska. Eichorst fired Bo Pelini despite a 67-27 record with the Huskers and hired Mike Riley away from Oregon State.

Things haven’t gone too well for Riley, who is now in his third season and has an 18-15 overall record (11-10 in Big Ten play). The team went 6-7 in 2015 and 9-4 last year, but are off to an underwhelming 3-4 start this season. Eichorst was fired after the Huskers lost to Northern Illinois at home. Moos’ hire was announced a day after the Huskers were trounced 56-14 at home by Ohio State. It was the program’s worst home loss since 1949.
