Nebraska fans express frustration with offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield
Nebraska's offense is not in a good place. The unit has struggled through the first seven games of the season.
The offense ranks No. 88 in the nation in total yards per game (370.3) and No. 90 in points per game (25.0). Fan frustration is starting to build with coordinator Marcus Satterfield.
Satterfield, who is in his second year with the program, didn't do himself any favors when talking to the media on Tuesday afternoon. When asked how many yards per play he would like the offense to average, Satterfield gave a surprising answer.
"Between four (yards per play) and six (yards per play). I honestly don't even know what leads the nation in yards per play... I don't know what's leading the country but I want it to be a little more than it is now."
Nebraska currently averages 5.5 yards per play. Miami (FL) leads the nation with 8.05 yards per play while 4.0 yards per play would rank near the bottom of the NCAA leaderboards with Wyoming (4.29 ypp) and Oklahoma (4.31 ypp).
The offense was supposed to more stable in 2024. With a ligimate quarterback at the helm, multiple additions to skills postion and an experienced line, fans had reasons for excitement about the offense heading into this season.
Unfortunately those hopes haven't come to fruition and patience is running thin. You wonder if head coach Matt Rhule will have to make any changes to the offensive coaching staff or the scheme in the near future.
Kickoff for Nebraska's game against the Ohio State Buckeyes will be at 11:00 a.m. CT and can be seen on Fox. Find social media reactions from Nebraska fans by scrolling below.
Not Great
4.0 yards per play is literally second to last in the country. 6.0 yards per play would rank 56th. Not great. pic.twitter.com/EEsarkI3OP

Not fantastic company
The 4-6 range would be somewhere in between Kennesaw State and Purdue https://t.co/JVliEjtHrP

19 games in
Marcus Satterfield has been at Nebraska for 19 games and just admitted he hasn't adopted the mindset of what it takes to win in the Big Ten. Marcus Satterfield has been involved in college football for 30 years and doesn't know what a good yards per play average is.

Coach Osborne appears to have a different idea
This is very telling. What offensive goals exist? Tom Osborne was very specific with his offensive goals. Here’s the 1997 team goals: https://t.co/Q24i4ftzWk pic.twitter.com/oleKqABi4Z

Are they demanding to run?
Matt Rhule: I want to be a powerhouse run team. Down your throat. Exhaust you into the 4th and jam it down your throat.
Satt: I have to commit to the run.
WHAT? How is Rhule not demanding this? https://t.co/NldC259NsL— Rhuler of Husker Nation (@RHULEROFNEB) October 22, 2024
Take it how you like
I’d also like to point out that I could text multiple high school offensive coordinators in my phone RIGHT NOW and they could tell me how many yards per play they are at, and what their goal is for the season.
No reason I’m saying that, take this however you’d like. https://t.co/4XFOiPoBhi— The BA Coach’s Show (@TheBACoachsShow) October 22, 2024

Explains a lot
Okay, this explains a lot... No wonder why the gameplan hasn't adjusted, he's just throwing darts at the playsheet not even knowing specific goals. https://t.co/W1eRmU5ClP

How many yards per play
I would like Nebraska to be somewhere around 7-8 yards per play but what do I know?
(BTW, I typed that before even looking where that would rank. Where would it rank? Top 10 in the country.)— James Pruch (@jamespruch) October 22, 2024
Glenn Thomas
Reminder: Nebraska already has a qualified offensive coordinator on the staff
His name is Glenn Thomas. It’s time for him to take over. 🌽🔥 pic.twitter.com/tkFwldKCLk— Wilson Dittman Sports (@WilsonDSports) October 22, 2024
Actually insane
The Satterfield clip is so infuriating because of how much the fanbase has poured into the program, both financially and emotionally.
You don’t even know what your unit’s yards per play is? And you’re one of the highest paid OC’s in the country?
That is actually insane.— Mike 🌽 (@HuskerMike28) October 22, 2024
Can't believe it
I honestly can't believe Marcus Satterfield's press conference today. He basically admitted he doesn't know what he's doing.

No one saw this coming
Marcus Satterfield's struggling as Nebraska's OC.

Not the best track record
Marcus Satterfield has held offensive coordinator roles across several teams, including South Carolina and Chattanooga. In 2022, his South Carolina offense averaged 381 yards per game, which translates to about 5.5 yards per play, placing them mid-tier in the SEC. During his time… https://t.co/SnpFYEdpFq
