The Gonzaga men’s basketball program, ranked No. 1 in the nation, will pause all activities for one week because of COVID-19, the school announced Sunday.

“Out of an abundance of caution and the well-being of student-athletes, in accordance with COVID-19 protocols Gonzaga has made the decision to pause men's basketball competitions through December 14,” the program wrote in a statement.

The Bulldogs were scheduled to play four games in that span.

Gonzaga on hiatus for one week

Its contest against No. 2 Baylor from Saturday was already canceled due to positive COVID-19 tests in Gonzaga’s traveling party. The schools announced hours before the scheduled tip that it was a mutual decision based on conversations with health officials to postpone the game. They will try to reschedule it for later in the season.

One student-athlete and one non-student-athlete tested positive for COVID-19, Gonzaga said. The student-athlete did not play in Wednesday’s victory over West Virginia.

Gonzaga would have been back on the court on Tuesday against Tarleton State for a four-game home stretch. The Bulldogs were to play Southern on Thursday, Northern Arizona on Saturday and Idaho on Dec. 14.

NCAA hoops schedules get wacky

College basketball got underway in late November and is grappling with how to hold a season with teams criss-crossing the country during a pandemic.

Two other top-25 teams canceled games on Saturday. Since the season started, more than 50 men’s games have been postponed or canceled, per USA Today Sports. Louisville has also paused its activities.

On the women’s side, powerhouse program Connecticut still hasn’t played a game. The program temporarily suspended team activities when someone in its traveling party tested positive. They Huskies missed the first four games of their schedule and are slated to return on Dec. 12.
