NBA Finals odds, betting: This could be our last chance to bet on the NBA this season
The NBA Finals picks up Monday night as the Denver Nuggets will look to capture the franchise’s first NBA championship. The Nuggets extended the series lead to 3-1 by sweeping the Miami Heat in South Beach and now return home with hopes of finishing the job. Miami proved it is capable of pulling off a road upset with a three-point win in Game 2, but now their championship hopes rely on doing it in consecutive games on Denver’s home floor. It’s time to face the reality that it could be our last chance to bet on the NBA this season, so let’s hit Game 5 from all angles. Here are two player props and a game prop that I had to jump on.
Jamal Murray over 33.5 points and assists (-115)
Nikola Jokić is almost certain to win the Finals MVP at -3000 odds, but Jamal Murray's ascension into superstardom has been the best story of the series. After coach Erik Spoelstra turned to Jimmy Butler to slow down the Nuggets' star guard, Murray responded with a 34-10-10 triple double that pushed the series back in the Nuggets' favor. He shot only 29% in Game 4, but Denver was still +22 when he was on the floor. I expect a massive bounceback for Murray as he finds his stroke on his home floor, where he has averaged 26.7 points per game in the postseason. He has only beat this number in two of the four Finals games, so we are able to get this at a reasonable price. He has also dished out 10 dimes in each of the first four games, so I’m confident he gets enough buckets to push us over the combined total of 33.5.
Aaron Gordon over 6.5 rebounds (-120)
Aaron Gordon’s 27-point outburst Friday night was a key factor in Denver's big win. I’m not convinced he can duplicate that type of offensive production, but his confidence will spill over to where the Nuggets need him most. Expect Gordon to come out physical in Game 5, answering the challenge on defense and crashing the glass. The veteran power forward pulled down 17 boards over the past two games and hasn’t been held below six since Game 3 of the Western Conference finals. Denver should have the fresher legs at home, and with coach Michael Malone leaning on Gordon more than ever (42 minutes in Game 4), he should have ample opportunity to cash this bet for us.
Halftime/Final — Miami Heat/Denver Nuggets (+425)
I think everybody wants to see a competitive game, but that’s never a reason to place a wager. However, I think Game 5 could create the perfect storm for a trend to get bucked regarding the Nuggets' first-half success. Denver has held the halftime lead in every game of this series, but the margin of victory has been eroding away little by little each game. After the Nuggets jumped out to a 17-point halftime lead in Game 1, the Heat have only trailed by 6, 5 and 4 points in Games 2-4. Spoelstra has publicly framed this game around Miami’s response to challenge, and I think the motivation shows most early in Game 5. Ultimately, I don’t think Miami has what it takes to extend this series, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they shock some people in the first half. I think the chances of Miami stealing a halftime lead are much better than the 19% probability the odds imply.
