Nashville Predators trade Yakov Trenin to Colorado Avalanche
The Nashville Predators traded Yakov Trenin to the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday in exchange for defenseman Jeremy Hanzel and a third-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.
Defensive prospect Graham Sward also heads to Colorado in the deal.
The Predators made the announcement on their website after much speculation the team might trade one of its pending free agents.
Earlier in the week, general manager Barry Trotz mentioned he was working on contract extensions for pending free agents, which include Trenin, Alex Carrier, Kevin Lankinen, Tyson Barrie and a few others.
Trenin was drafted in 2015 in the second round of the NHL draft. He signed an entry level contract that July, but did not make his NHL debut until October 2019.
Trenin became a full-time player during the 2021-22 season, mostly as a bruising third-line winger with some offensive punch. He scored 17 goals that season, putting up 24 points in 80 games. That led to then-general manager David Poile signing him to a two-year, $3.4 million deal on Aug. 5, 2022, after an arbitration hearing.
A primarily defensive weapon, Trenin likely will be used by the Avalanche on the penalty kill and defensive situations.
With this additional third-round pick, the Nashville Predators now have five picks in the first four rounds of the 2025 draft.
