Are Nashville Predators open to trading 2-time All-Star goalie Juuse Saros? Some thoughts
Here we go again.
The Nashville Predators are open to trading two-time All-Star and Vezina Trophy finalist Juuse Saros.
At least according to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, who said Thursday during "Insider Trading" that moving Saros is a "possibility" and that Predators general manager Barry Trotz "have no choice but to listen" to offers because so many teams are so desperate for goaltending.
LeBrun, a regular breaker of NHL news, went on to point out that moving Saros would require a "serious, serious offer" — for example, more than two first-round picks plus a player such as, say, the Los Angeles Kings' Quinton Byfield.
We went through this exercise before last season's NHL trade deadline. This year's deadline is March 8.
We heard hints of this song last offseason. Both of which would have been much more ideal times to deal Saros.
His value was much higher. His remaining term — two years at $5 million per — was much sexier. His struggles this season had yet to happen.
Besides, very few players, save for those with no-movement clauses — hi, Roman Josi and Filip Forsberg — are "off limits." GMs listen to all kinds of offers. So to say Trotz, who has said signing Saros remains a top priority, is open to listening to offers isn't saying much.
If the Predators couldn't get the king's ransom they reportedly sought for Saros in the past, they almost certainly won't get it now.
I'd wager Saros isn't going anywhere but to the nearest pen, when he and the Predators agree to a contract extension. Besides, the team is in the thick of the playoff race even though Saros hasn't been Saros.
Yes, Kevin Lankinen is a capable backup. Could be a bridge goalie.
Yes, Yaroslav Askarov is waiting in the wings, but he isn't ready. Remember last summer when Trotz made him available?
Possibilities are endless. Probabilities are not.
I'll stick with the much higher probability that the Predators and Saros don't part ways.
A big limb, I know.
