Myles Garrett, Za'Darius Smith on Cleveland Browns injury report after missing practice

BEREA — Myles Garrett and Za'Darius Smith both missed Thursday's practice with injuries. Whether or not they could keep either or both of the defensive ends out of the Browns' road game at the Jacksonville Jaguars remains something to monitor.

Garrett was listed with a foot injury, while Smith was listed with a back ailment. Neither had been on the initial injury report of the week on Wednesday, and neither are believed to be serious, but will be watched between now and when the Browns depart for Florida on Saturday.

The Browns will have their initial injury designations on Friday afternoon following practice.

Smith was seen in the locker room during the period open to the media prior to practice. Garrett was not seen during the 45 minutes or so the media was present.

Neither was seen on the field during the open period of practice later.

Garrett had a strip-sack of Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott in Sunday's opening-day loss, along with a quarterback hit, a tackle for loss and two combined tackles. Smith also had a sack, a quarterback hit, a tackle for loss and three combined tackles against Dallas.

The Browns (0-1) have already been pummeled with injuries, particularly on defense. Earlier Thursday, rookie cornerback Myles Harden was placed on the injured reserve list with a shin injury.

Harden was the fifth Browns defensive player to go on injured reserve in the last two days. Safety Juan Thornhill (calf), defensive tackle Maurice Hurst II (ankle) and linebackers Tony Fields II (ankle) and Mohamoud Diabate (hip flexor) all were placed on the list Wednesday with injuries sustained in the loss to the Cowboys.

“Yeah, we lost four in the same game last year in the Jacksonville game," defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz said Thursday. "Jordan Elliott went down with a concussion, and Ogbo (Okoronkwo) and Mo tore their pecs and Grant Delpit, tore his groin and Denzel (Ward) wasn’t playing, so nothing new for us. I would say with those injuries, it does give other people some opportunities and we have some good young players that can step right in and then when we get those guys back, I expect it to give us a good boost."

The Browns have already ruled out tight end David Njoku (ankle) from Sunday's game in Jacksonville. Left tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. did practice on Thursday after having not done so the previous day.

Wills continues to recover from last December's arthroscopic knee surgery. He and right tackle Jack Conklin, who has been out since the 2023 season opener with a knee injury, were both inactive for the Cowboys game.
