Myles Garrett active at youth camp while wearing sleeve after minicamp hamstring tweak

ROCKY RIVER — Myles Garrett drew attention on the final day of the Browns' mandatory minicamp Thursday after coming up early in the workout holding his left hamstring and sitting out the remainder of practice.

A day later, the NFL's reigning Defensive Player of the Year was back on the field, only in a different kind of camp.

Garrett, wearing a full compression sleeve on his left leg, was an active participant in his youth camp at Lutheran West High School on Friday. He, along with Browns teammate Dawand Jones, bounced from group to group, interacting with the campers, including throwing passes during certain drills.

The hamstring, beyond the sleeve, did not appear to be bothering Garrett as he moved around the field at the camp. The company running the camp restricted all questions not pertaining to the camp itself during the five-minute media availabilities for both Garrett and Jones.

Asked about the hamstring as he was being whisked away from the news conference and toward the field, Garrett replied, "I feel great."

Garrett came up grabbing his left hamstring early in the final minicamp practice during a defensive line drill. After speaking with Browns trainers, he essentially turned into a spectator for the remainder of practice, spending some of that time talking with co-owner Dee Haslam.

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski was asked Thursday about the hamstring and said, "Yeah, he'll be fine."

The Browns are on a break for nearly six weeks before they gather at the end of July to start training camp. The veterans are expected to report July 24 before going to The Greenbrier in West Virginia the following day for the first workout.

Garrett is coming off a year in which he won his first Defensive Player of the Year award, beating out Pittsburgh Steelers star T.J. Watt. He posted 14 sacks during the season, and Pro Football Focus credited him with 14 hits and 60 hurries.

That season wasn't without a bit of an injury scare. After a Week 12 loss at the Denver Broncos, Garrett needed assistance in putting on a shirt and coat, and left the locker room with his arm in a sling, because of a shoulder injury.

Garrett underwent testing on the shoulder the next day while the Browns were in Los Angeles, with no damage being discovered. He played the next Sunday in a loss to the Rams, and missed only one game during the season, as he was inactive for the regular-season finale at the Cincinnati Bengals along with several other veterans to rest for the playoffs.
