How much did Nick Dunlap win after The American Express victory? Payout, purse breakdown

Alabama sophomore golfer Nick Dunlap made history at The American Express on Sunday.

With a final-round score of 2-under-par, Dunlap shot a four-round aggregate of 29 under, beating Christiaan Bezuidenhout by a single stroke (-28) and winning The American Express. In so doing, he became the first amateur to win a PGA Tour event in over 30 years. At 20 years old, Dunlap is the youngest amateur to win on the tour since 1910.

Yet despite the historic nature of his victory, he will not get to enjoy the financial benefits it provides: Because of Dunlap's amateur status (and even if he decides to turn pro immediately), he will not be able to cash in on what would otherwise be a multi-million payday.

That's not to say Dunlap won't be able to make any financial gains from his victory (either through NIL or, perhaps, some sort of professional sponshorship). But it does mean he will not earn any official winnings by way of the PGA Tour.

Here's all you need to know of the winnings Dunlap would have made had he won The American Express as a professional:

How much did Nick Dunlap win at The American Express?

Dunlap did not make any money with his win at The American Express, nor did he earn any FedEXCup points, as he entered the tournament as an amateur.

The winner's share instead goes to Bezuidenhout, the second-place finisher in the tournament. Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele and Kevin Yu, who all finished tied for third in the standings, will each be paid $635,600 (the amount they would have been paid had they finished tied for second).

Does Nick Dunlap get paid?

Under USGA amateurism rules, Dunlap is not allowed to accept any prize money in excess of $1,000. Had he entered The American Express as a professional, he would have earned the winner's share of the tournament's purse: roughly $1.5 million (which, again, goes to Bezuidenhout).

Dunlap won't come away completely empty-handed, however. With his win, he's eligible for PGA Tour membership through the 2026 PGA Tour season, and will receive exemption during the 2024 season, including the Masters and PGA Championship.

American Express golf payout

Because Dunlap did not earn any prize money, second-place finisher Bezuidenhout will take home the winner's share, with golfers behind him in the standings earning money equivalent to a finish one place higher than their final standings (third place earns second-place money, and so on).

Here is a breakdown of the top earners at The American Express, including, payouts and winner's share (via the PGA Tour).
