What is the most runs in a college baseball game? Texas Tech scores 32 vs. Texas Southern

Texas Tech baseball broke out the bats Friday afternoon and did made some history while doing so.

During the bottom of the eighth, Red Raiders freshman Davis Rivers lined the ball into left-center field — scoring senior infielder Drew Woodcox for Texas Tech's 32nd run of the afternoon against Texas Southern — setting the program record for most runs in a single game and the most scored by a Division I team this season. Texas Tech would go on to win 32-5.

Though the Red Raiders made program history for most runs in a game, they didn't reach the NCAA single-game record for most runs which was set in 1999 when Nebraska scored 50 runs against Chicago State.

"It really doesn't mean anything," Red Raiders coach Tim Tadlock said postgame on the record breaker. "It means you won the game. I mean really we're probably just as happy winning the game 3-2 as you are whatever the score was. To me, we're aspiring to play baseball at the highest level we can and for each guy and our team.

"I don't think we were close to that today, no matter what the runs said."

The Red Raiders didn't take long to attack opposing starting pitcher Carlos Marquez, as Texas Tech plated six runs in the first inning — three of which were unearned — on RBIs coming from Owen Washburn, Damian Bravo, Gage Harrelson, TJ Pompey and Austin Green. Texas Tech would then score 26 runs between the third and eighth inning across three different pitchers, two of whom gave up 10 runs each and threw over 80 pitches in relief. Additionally, Landon Stripling and Woodcox each homered twice on the afternoon.

Texas Tech opened up its season 2-1 at the Shriners Children's College Showdown at Globe Life Field, picking up wins against Nebraska and Oregon. The Red Raiders picked up their second win of the week Friday against Texas Southern to improve to 4-2 on the year.
