Moses Moody is a casualty of the Warriors’ roster depth
Moses Moody enjoyed a strong start to the season. The third-year guard is averaging 8.1 points and 3.2 rebounds in 31 games, shooting 47.7% from the field and 33% from the 3-point range. However, his role within the Golden State Warriors rotation is often limited due to the strength and depth of the team’s guard rotation.
Moody is fighting for playing time against Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Chris Paul and Cory Joseph. Despite the stiff competition, he is averaging 18 minutes per game this season, which is a testament to the impact he makes when on the court. However, Steve Kerr believes Moody could have a bigger role if the path to more minutes wasn’t as difficult to navigate.
“Moses right now is the victim of our depth as a team, as a roster,” Kerr told the San Francisco Chronicle. “I think we have 13 guys who could all be in the rotation. Cory Joseph, every time I’ve put him out there, has played really well. Obviously, he’s got two Hall of Fame point guards ahead of him. So it’s tough to play three guards.
Competition for minutes is a good thing. Especially when you’re a young guard learning from some of the best to play in your position. Nevertheless, Moody will likely need to continue raising his game if he wants to force Kerr’s hand and earn a bigger role within the rotation.
This season, Jonathan Kuminga, Brandin Podziemski and Trayce Jackson-Davis have secured bigger roles than they expected coming into the season. Seeing other young talents achieve that success will likely be another motivating factor for Moody.
