Montreal Canadiens Book Review: Habs 365

What if I told you there’s a book out there with a Montreal Canadiens story per day? Rejoice, there is such a book! From self-confessed Toronto Maple Leafs fan and author Mike Commito comes Habs 365.

After writing Hockey 365: Stories from the Ice, Leafs 365, and Hockey 365, The Second Period: More Daily stories from the Ice, Commito now delves into the league's most storied franchise's history. Even the most fervent Habs fans are bound to find some stories in there they don't know about their favourite team.

The author covers a wide variety of topics, from birthdays to memorable games to anecdotes, there's something in there for everybody. Whether you are a new fan in need of getting a history lesson in all things Canadiens or a die-hard Habs faithful who has lived and breathed Montreal hockey since birth, you'll learn or reminisce, both very enjoyable experiences.

Be prepared for some painful moments though, trades that have hurt the franchise, losses that remain fresh on your mind even though it's been over 30 years and moments that almost were, it hurts be prepared!

Painful moments for the Leafs are also covered however, the "it was 3-1" series is of course in there, must not have been a lot of fun for Commito to write, but the fact he didn't shy away from it shows how he was able to put personal preferences aside.

The author also goes back to things Canadiens' fans might prefer forgetting about like for instance that faithful day in 2018 when the Habs drafted Jesperi Kotkaniemi with the third-overall pick, passing on Brady Tkachuk in the process. Who would have thought the "What?!?! Lady was right all along...about KK, not about drafting Zadina however.

If you care very deeply about this organization, you'll go through an emotional rollercoaster. The story from June 29, 2016 was one of the ones who hit home the most for me. I don't know how many of my readers remember that date by heart, but I'll never forget that day, how my mobile phone literally blew up with calls and texts about what had just happened.

I was driving back home from work on that particular day and since I hate radio with a passion, I was listening to one of my own playlists so I didn't hear the news on radio. As soon as I was done crossing the Pont de Quebec back to the south shore, I went into the Maxi's parking lot and I checked my phone. Seconds later, I felt completely devastated.

That's what's so great about hockey though, for me, that day's news was a nightmare, but for others if was a glorious day, one on which they welcomed a player they knew and loved to the Montreal Canadiens' roster.

I'll admit it, reading the book made me wonder what my version would read like, what would I put in there? I would certainly put Patrick Roy's first game back in Montreal as the Avalanche goaltender in my version. That day I was part of a group of students from the south shore of Quebec who attended the game wearing a Quebec Nordiques jersey.

Somehow, our geography teacher had managed to convinced the school that going to a hockey game was a field trip that fit in with his program. So on March 5, 1997, we went to the Centre Molson and cheered as Roy backstopped the Avalanche to a 7-3 win over the Habs and I can tell you we got a bit of attitude from Canadiens' fans in our fleurdelisé jerseys.

Habs fans, if you're wondering what you could put down on your Christmas list look no further, Habs 365 is for you and I bet it's even better when read during the Christmas holidays by the tree's lights.
