MMA veteran, WEC title challenger Hiromitsu Miura dead at 43
Hiromitsu Miura is dead at 43.
Miura's family released a statement on social media on Tuesday, revealing the tragic news. The 21-fight MMA veteran and former professional boxer lost his battle with acute leukemia on Oct. 26, which had been ongoing since mid-September, according to the family's statement.
A Ukiha, Fukuoka, Japan, native, Miura went 13-8 in his 17-year MMA career as a welterweight and middleweight. He made his MMA debut in 2004 as part of the legendary Pancrase promotion in Japan. Miura enjoyed the brunt of his career in Pancrase, fighting nine times for the promotion and winning its welterweight championship in 2016.
Most western fans remember the third-degree Judo black belt for his run in WEC from 2007-09. Miura had five fights in the famous blue cage, going 2-3. In 2008, he challenged for the WEC welterweight crown opposite future UFC staple Carlos Condit in a true hidden gem moment for the division. Condit won the clash via strikes in round four, but the pair put on a show to earn Fight of the Night honors. The fight was Condit's last before he signed with UFC. Miura also took on notable names like Jason "Mayhem" Miller, Daichi Abe and Edgar Garcia during his time under the WEC umbrella.
After WEC, he put MMA on hold to focus on a professional boxing career. Primarily fighting in Japan, Miura found great success in the sweet science, winning all but the last of his 10 total matches. Miura boxed from 2010-12, then returned to Pancrase for the final portion of his career. His final MMA fight came against Masayuki Kikuiri at Pancrase 322 in June 2021.
