Tyler Austin and Joe Kelly, the central figures in Wednesday night’s brawl between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, were both suspended by Major League Baseball on Thursday.

Austin, the Yankees designated hitter/first baseman who charged the mound after getting hit by a pitch, was suspended for five games and fined an undisclosed amount. Red Sox relief pitcher Joe Kelly was dinged with a six-game suspension after MLB decided he intentionally hit Austin. Kelly was also fined. Both Austin and Kelly have elected to appeal their suspensions and, according to MLB rules, can play until their appeals are heard.

Others fined by MLB in the aftermath of the fight: Red Sox manager Alex Cora and Yankees third-base coach Phil Nevin. CC Sabathia, Dustin Pedroia and Xander Bogaerts were each fined an undisclosed amount for leaving the bench while being on the disabled list.

The whole thing started with an aggressive slide by Austin into second base that the Red Sox took issue with. The benches cleared after the slide, but the real fireworks happened later in the game when Kelly hit Austin with a pitch. Austin charged the mound, the benches cleared and punches were thrown.

After the game, both sides denied any wrongdoing — Austin said his slide was clean and Kelly said he didn’t hit Austin on purpose — but MLB obviously wasn’t buying that. The Red Sox and Yankees are bitter rivals and this was neither the first time they’ve fought nor the last time they’ll see each other this season. But both managers said they didn’t expect the beef to carry over to Thursday night’s game.

The Yankees-Red Sox fight was one of two in Major League Baseball on Wednesday. The Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres also had a brawl, with Nolan Arenado charging the mound after being thrown at. It was, according to Jayson Stark of The Athletic, the first time two players had charged the mound on the same day in separate games since 2000.
