Missouri's Dennis Gates frustrated after Tennessee loss, drops F-bomb in news conference

Missouri basketball coach Dennis Gates knows firsthand the difficulty and what it takes to knock off a top-five team.

The Tigers, who entered Tuesday's matchup on polar opposite sides of the conference standings with No. 5 Tennessee, came close to striking distance of it before ultimately falling 72-67 to the Vols.

Perhaps that's why the second-year coach let some frustration out postgame in his news conference.

In the second half of Tuesday's game, Tennessee coach Rick Barnes went to a bigger lineup and brought back in 6-foot-8 forward Toby Awaka. Barnes' adjustment created some mismatches for the Tigers and separation with the game itself, as the Vols began to draw fouls and trips to the free-throw line sparking a 21-5 run to finish the game. The Vols ultimately out-rebounded the Tigers 39-34.

It also led to frustration after the game from Gates, as Tennessee finished with 27 free throws on Tuesday compared to Mizzou's 21. With the loss, Mizzou dropped to 8-18 overall in 0-13 in SEC play.

"We gotta do a better job drawing fouls," Gates said. "I think we suck at it. We’re f---ing terrible. We’re terrible at drawing fouls and we got to do a better job."

Here's a clip of Gates' postgame frustration. (Warning: explicit language used).

Gates then interrupted a question being asked by a reporter to circle back at his previous remarks and make sure that his comment would not be bleeped out.

"Can you all write that in there, right? You can all write that in there, right? Make sure you don't bleep that out," Gates said.

Missouri next plays Saturday at Arkansas (10-5, 4-9) in Bud Walton Arena on Saturday.
