Missouri football jumped by SEC team in coaches poll, moves into tie with Big Ten team

Missouri football remained at No. 8 in the US LBM Coaches Poll released Sunday morning after defeating Boston College on Saturday in Columbia, but with an interesting caveat.

The Tigers are tied with Penn State for the No. 8 spot at 968 voting points. While that is technically the same spot Missouri held last week, when MU trailed the Big Ten team by one voting point, both Mizzou and PSU have been leapfrogged by Tennessee.

The Vols jumped from No. 9 to No. 7 after beating Kent State 71-0.

The Tigers overcame a slow start and several self-inflicted wounds to defeat Boston College. Luther Burden III had 117 receiving yards and a touchdown, and Brady Cook completed 21-of-30 passes for 264 yards and ran home another score to help get the Tigers over the line.

Boston College, unlike in the AP Top 25, was not ranked in last week’s coaches poll, instead taking the spot as the second team out with 36 voting points. After the loss on Faurot Field, the Eagles received six voting points in Sunday’s poll.

Georgia held on to the No. 1 spot in the rankings but received fewer first-place votes after narrowly defeating Kentucky on the road, taking 42 this week compared to 50 last week. Texas moved above Ohio State to No. 2, and Alabama (4) and Ole Miss (5) each won Saturday and stayed in the top five.

Oklahoma (No. 13) and LSU (16) kept their spots in the top 20 despite close wins over Tulane and South Carolina, respectively, and Texas A&M reentered the pole at No. 20 after defeating Florida on the road.

Missouri’s next opponent is Vanderbilt, which is no longer receiving votes after a loss to Georgia State on the road.

Missouri football drops one spot in AP poll

Missouri dropped to No. 7 in the AP Top 25, which was released Sunday afternoon. The Tigers, like in the coaches poll, were leapfrogged by Tennessee.

Miami is now the next team behind Missouri, climbing two spots to jump above Penn State and Oregon.

There's a new No. 1 in the AP poll, too, as Texas took the spot, trading places with Georgia in the Week 3 poll.

The SEC still has six teams in the top seven in the poll, with Alabama at No. 4 and Ole Miss at No. 5.

Mizzou faces the Crimson Tide in late October, and there are two other ranked teams on MU's schedule in the remainder of the top 25: Oklahoma at No. 15 and Texas A&M at No. 25. South Carolina, which MU faces in November, received three voting points.

LSU is the lone other SEC team in the poll, taking the No. 16 spot.

Boston College dropped from No. 24 last week to the fifth team out in the latest rankings.
