Missouri football climbs in coaches poll, AP Top 25 after UMass win

The Tigers moved up in New England.

After defeating UMass 45-3 on Saturday in Amherst, Massachusetts, and with multiple losses from teams in front of it, Missouri football climbed two spots in the US LBM Coaches Poll on Sunday, jumping up to the No. 16 spot.

The Tigers are now the eighth-ranked team in the SEC in the coaches poll at the midway point of their season. Mizzou will face unranked Auburn on Saturday in Columbia.

Running back Marcus Carroll scored three touchdowns against UMass with his typical backfield partner, Nate Noel, out due to back tightness. Luther Burden III took a 61-yard touchdown to the end zone on the second play of the game, but left the matchup in the third quarter, seemingly with a shoulder injury. Missouri coach said Burden will "be fine" during an in-game interview on the ESPN2 broadcast.

Missouri is now 5-1 as it enters the thick of SEC play. Results elsewhere in the country helped the Tigers climb in the rankings.

Utah lost on Friday to unranked Arizona State and dropped out of the top 25. Oklahoma’s 34-3 loss to top-ranked Texas in the Red River Rivalry cost the Sooners a spot in the top 25.

Missouri has been ranked as high as No. 8 in the poll. The Tigers hit a season-low in the rankings last Sunday after losing at Texas A&M and dropping to No. 18.

The Longhorns held on to the top overall spot, and there are now five SEC teams among the top 10.

Georgia stayed at No. 4, moving above Ohio State after the Buckeyes’ loss in a top-three matchup to now-No. 2 Oregon but behind Penn State, which is the new No. 3, after the Nittany Lions' win over USC in overtime on the road.

Alabama, after surviving a scare at home against South Carolina, stayed at No. 7. Tennessee and LSU, which both won in overtime over Florida and Ole Miss, are Nos. 8 and 10, respectively. The ACC now has two teams in the top 10, with Clemson wedged between the Vols and LSU at No. 9 and Miami at no. 6

Mississippi dropped seven spots to No. 15, one spot ahead of Missouri. Texas A&M, which was on an idle week after hammering Mizzou in College Station, stayed at No. 14.

Missouri is No. 19 in AP Top 25, up two spots

Missouri moved back into the top 20 of the latest AP Top 25 poll to the No. 19 mark in the country in Sunday’s rankings. Like in the coaches poll, the Tigers climbed two spots and jumped above now-unranked Utah and Oklahoma.

Texas remained top of the AP voters’ rankings, followed, in order, by Oregon, Penn State, Ohio State and Georgia to complete the top five.

There are eight SEC teams in the poll, down from nine as the Sooners dropped out. Alabama (No. 7), LSU (No. 8), Tennessee (No. 11), Texas A&M (No. 14) and Ole Miss (No. 18) all remained ahead of Missouri.

The three teams AP voters ranked of Mizzou that the coaches did not: Boise State (15); Indiana (16); and Kansas State (17).
