Missouri basketball final score: Tigers break several Gates-era bests, trounce Delta Devils
If ever there was a reminder that there are no running clocks in college basketball …
Mizzou comfortably extended its winning streak to three games Thursday at Mizzou Arena, defeating Mississippi Valley State 111-39 on Norm Stewart Court, breaking multiple previous records in the Dennis Gates era.
The 72-point victory was, by quite some margin, the most lopsided win of Gates’ time as Missouri’s coach, eclipsing a 38-point win over Coastal Carolina on Nov. 23, 2022.
It was also the most points scored in a single game in the Gates era, taking the honor from 105-point outings over SIUE and Houston Christian in November 2022. The last time the Tigers scored 100 points was in the 2023-24 season-opener against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Nov. 6, 2023.
The Delta Devils were the last-ranked team on the basketball analytics site KenPom entering the game, and Mizzou made it look like that. The second half turned into an exhibition, as the first 12 Mizzou players to check into the game all scored points.
In the first half, Missouri’s Tamar Bates and Marques Warrick combined for 20 points and 6-of-7 shooting from behind the arc in the first half as Mizzou sprinted out to 51-19 lead at the break, just one field goal shy of the pre-game spread at 33.5 points.
Caleb Grill scored double-digit points for the second straight game, and Mark Mitchell hit the mark for the third straight outing. True freshmen Marcus Allen and Annor Boateng joined Bates, Warrick and Jacob Crews as also recording double-digit scoring games.
The lopsided matchup allowed Gates to experiment with some lineups, with each of freshmen Annor Boateng, Allen, Peyton Marshall getting significant minutes on Norm Stewart Court. Both freshmen Trent Burns and T.O. Barrett did not make their debuts.
Missouri basketball vs Delta Devils score updates
This section will be updated when the game begins.
Tigers drop a ton
Missouri has now tied the most points of the Dennis Gates era, drawing level 105-point outings against SIUE and Houston Christian in 2022.
Jacob Crews took the Tigers above 100 with a driving layup. Mizzou leads 105-35. There is still 3:19 to play at Mizzou Arena.
It's not if, but when Mizzou scores 100
With 11:40 to play, it's Missouri 78, MVSU 25. Caleb Grill is up to 15 points, Tamar Bates has 13 and Marques Warrick is still on 11. All 10 players who have seen the court have scored now for Mizzou.
For whatever it's worth and it might be nothing, Iowa State played this team on its home court and won by 83-44. There is almost absolutely nothing to glean from any of this, but that's at least a fraction of something.
Second half begins. What's on the line?
This game is wrapped. Tamar Bates has just made a layup and Mark Mitchell converted a free throw to extend the lead to 35 points. If you're still here, thank you. After some half-time digging, here's some numbers to keep an eye on in an otherwise essentially meaningless second half.
Mizzou has not scored 100 points in a game since dropping 101 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Nov. 6, 2023, in last season's opener.
The biggest win of Gates' time as Missouri's head coach was a 38-point victory over Coastal Carolina on Nov. 23, 2022. That looks like it'll change today.
Half: Mizzou 51, Mississippi Valley State 19
Nine different players have points for Missouri, with Marques Warrick (11) and Tamar Bates (9) leading the way. The Tigers are 9-of-18 from 3.
Mizzou closed out the half with what has to be the youngest rotation of Dennis Gates' time as coach. True freshmen Marcus Allen, Annor Boateng and Peyton Marshall shared the floor with true sophomores Anthony Robinson II and Trent Pierce in the final couple minutes.
It's raining buckets
Missouri just about can't miss right now.
Marques Warrick is 4-of-5 from the field with a 3-of-3 mark from behind the arc. Jacob Crews just sent the team into the Under-8 break with a step-back 3. The Tigers are 53.8% as a team with seven makes from 3, and they are 60% from the field. Mizzou 37, MVSU 11.
Gates switches up lineup, results don't differ
Dennis Gates came out of the U16 timeout with an all-new lineup from his starting five, letting Marques Warrick, Marcus Allen, Caleb Grill, Trent Pierce and Peyton Marshall all see the floor together. That worked equally as well as the starters: Warrick is 2-of-2 from 3-point land, and Allen has worked his way into the lane successfully a couple times for four quick points (he also grabbed four quick boards). Jacob Crews also checked in for Pierce and dropped a corner 3.
If ever there was a time for lineup experimentation, tonight's the night.
With 10:57 left in the first half, it's Mizzou 22, MVSU 6. Let's see who comes out on the other end of this media timeout.
Missouri jumps out to 9-2 lead
Mississippi Valley State took the early lead at Mizzou Arena, but it lasted just 41 seconds.
Since then, Josh Gray kicked one out for a Tamar Bates corner 3. Mark Mitchell drew two shooting fouls underneath the rim and has gone 2-of-4 at the line. Anthony Robinson II picked a Delta Devil's pocket and sent a court-court pass to Tamar Bates, who fed it into Annor Boateng's step for a fast-break layup. Trent Pierce has two points as the first player off the bench.
Starters announced for Missouri-MVSU
Missouri has announced its starters for Game 4 of the season, and there's a third straight start for freshman Annor Boateng:
PG Anthony Robinson; G Tamar Bates; G Annor Boateng; F Mark Mitchell; C Josh Gray.

Pregame updates from Mizzou Arena
6:09 p.m.: Starters will be announced here shortly, and 7-foot-5 freshman Trent Burns is at least on Norm Stewart Court and actively taking part in pregame warmups. Tony Perkins is also present, but he's mostly inactive on the sidelines watch the rest of the team go through final warmups.
5:10 p.m.: Eli Hoff of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch has reported that Missouri point guard Tony Perkins will miss this evening's game with a leg injury. The injury is not believed to be serious. Still no word on freshman center Trent Burns, who has missed the past three games, but we'll reach out to a team spokesperson to check.

Missouri 82, Mississippi Valley State 49
Anything other than an opportunity for some relief reps for the Tigers’ reserves late on in this game is a hiccup. The Delta Devils went 1-30 last season.
"The things we have to improve on, when you look at our stat sheet, is a positive a more positive assist-to-turnover ratio; more positive rebounding margin, continue to execute on the free throw line," Gates told local media Wednesday. "But also when it comes down to the second half, I think we've got to continue to do a better job of putting two halves together. Those are areas that I think we can learn from and continue to grow."
Missouri injury and availability updates
Missouri’s 7-foot-5 freshman center Trent Burns has missed the Tigers’ first three games of the season with what has been reported as an illness. There is currently no official word from the team if he will be available to face Mississippi Valley State or not.
