Mississippi State, Ole Miss baseball picked to finish at bottom of SEC West by coaches

The 2023 baseball season was not kind to Ole Miss or Mississippi State, and the SEC's coaches don't think 2024 is going to be much better.

Mississippi's two SEC programs were picked to finish at the bottom of the SEC's Western Division in a preseason coaches poll released by the conference on Thursday.

The coaches have Ole Miss finishing sixth and Mississippi State seventh.

Here's the predicted order of finish for both divisions.

East:

  1. Florida

  2. Tennessee

  3. Vanderbilt

  4. South Carolina

  5. Kentucky

  6. Georgia

  7. Mizzou

West:

  1. Arkansas

  2. LSU

  3. Texas A&M

  4. Alabama

  5. Auburn

  6. Ole Miss

  7. Mississippi State

The Rebels did not have any players picked as preseason all-conference selections. Mississippi State outfielder Dakota Jordan earned a second-team nod from the coaches.

The Bulldogs followed their 2021 national championship with a seventh-placed finish in the SEC West in 2022 and a sixth-place finish last season.

After winning a title of its own in 2022, Ole Miss fell into a similar trap, finishing last in the SEC West a year ago.

The Rebels open their season with a trip to Hawaii for a four-game series against the Rainbow Warriors beginning Feb. 16. The Bulldogs start their season with a three-game set at home against Air Force beginning on the same date.
