Late free throws cost Mississippi State basketball again in loss at Ole Miss
OXFORD — A new era of a longtime rivalry tipped off Tuesday when Mississippi State basketball took on Ole Miss at the SJB Pavilion for the first time since Chris Beard was hired as the Rebels' coach. If the remainder of Beard's matchups against MSU and coach Chris Jans era are anything like the first chapter, a fun rivalry is brewing.
The Rebels picked up an 86-82 win at the SJB Pavilion, snapping a three-game skid in the series.
Ole Miss was led by Juju Murray who collected 22 points. Four Rebels in total scored in double figures.
The Bulldogs were paced by freshman guard Josh Hubbard who scored 21 points, including 16 in the first half. Hubbard originally signed with Ole Miss, but after former coach Kermit Davis was fired last February, he flipped toward MSU.
Ole Miss built a lead as large as 11 in the second half. However, MSU trimmed it to two and had forward Cameron Matthews headed to the free throw line with a chance to tie it with four seconds to play.
Matthews missed both, essentially capping a victory for Ole Miss.
