Milwaukee Bucks officially sign guard Delon Wright

The Milwaukee Bucks officially signed veteran guard Delon Wright, adding needed depth and defensive versatility to a roster that hopes to contend for the 2024-25 NBA championship.

Wright agreed a one-year, veteran minimum deal on July 1, but a contract could not officially be signed until 11:01 a.m. CT on July 6. The minimum for Wright, who has nine years of service before this season, is $3,003,427.

The NBA reimburses teams who sign veterans with three or more years of service to prevent clubs from ignoring older players – so only $2,087,519 pf Wright's contract counts against Milwaukee’s books.

The Bucks entered the 2024 free agency period as a team with limited roster-building flexibility as a second-apron team, which means they could only offer minimum contracts to free agents. The Bucks signed draft picks AJ Johnson and Tyler Smith, leaving three potential roster spots open for veterans.

Milwaukee has also agreed to a deal with veteran forward Taurean Prince, but that contract has yet to be made official as of publication.

The Bucks have begun a year with only 14 guaranteed contracts on the roster in 2020 and 2021, so it possible the team does not immediately add another free agent after Wright and Prince. Leaving a spot open allows the team flexibility for a later signing or acquiring multiple players for one in a trade.

While Wright and Prince have started at times for different teams, they have primarily been key reserves through their careers. Prince is 6 feet, 6 inches and 218 pounds and should provide some defensive help on the wings, while also bringing a steady three-point shot (39.6% last season with the Los Angeles Lakers) to the offense.

Wright is a 6-5, 185-pound guard who has played both spots in the back court and is known as an aggressive on-ball defender (career 1.2 steals per game, averages 1-3 deflections per game). He’s a career 35% three-point shooter but has shown the ability to make them more consistently (39.8% in 27 games with Sacramento in 2020-21, 38.5% in 27 games with Toronto in 2015-16, and 37.9% in 77 games with Atlanta in 2021-22).

Wright is a former first-round pick, being selected No. 20 in 2015 by Toronto.
