Brewers 10, Tigers 0: Just what the doctor ordered after getting swept in Philadelphia
How about that for a bounce back?
Coming off their first time being swept this season, the Milwaukee Brewers broke out the bats with a contagious hitting effort and got their longest start of the season on the mound to cruise to a 10-0 win over the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park on Friday night.
The Brewers scored two runs over their three losses in Philadelphia earlier in the week. Naturally, they more than doubled that through the first two innings against the Tigers.
Blake Perkins had three hits, including two triples, Brice Turang had four hits and Christian Yelich reached base safely five times.
But the real story was starting pitcher Tobias Myers, who threw eight shutout innings with just one hit allowed.
Tobias Myers delivers a gem
What a start it was for Myers.
Called back up to make the start Friday as the Brewers face a rotation depleted by injuries, Myers hurled the best start of his career, dominating the Tigers for eight shutout innings with one hit allowed
Myers attacked from the outset, resulting in lots of easy pop flies and plenty of other weak contact. The Tigers got a leadoff single in the bottom of the first inning and no hits the rest of the night against Myers, who struck out five and walked only two.
Myers not only delivered the longest outing of the year by a Brewers pitcher but was also the first to even pitch into the eighth inning. His ERA went from 5.40 to 4.15.
James Meeker, a teammate of Myers' at Class AA Biloxi last year, made his MLB debut by pitching a scoreless ninth to seal the deal.
Insurance, insurance, insurance
A contactapalooza has served the Brewers well tonight. Following a five-run second, they are continuing to put the bat on the ball and finding green grass against Reese Olson. Five consecutive hits to open the fourth have pushed Milwaukee's lead to 7-0. William Contreras' two-run double on a high chopper over the head of third baseman Gio Urshela accounted for the scoring.
Brewers tag former farmhand Reese Olson in the second
Reese Olson was a hidden gem in the Brewers' system after being taken in the 13th round in 2018 draft, pitching well through the lower levels of the minors but never gaining quite as much acclaim as he deserved in prospect rankings.
The Brewers ended up trading him to Detroit at the MLB trade deadline in 2021 in exchange for reliever Daniel Norris. It turned out to be a disastrous move by Milwaukee, as Norris was completely ineffective down the stretch while Norris shot up the Tigers' system.
The 24-year-old righty had an ERA of 2.48 in 11 starts with Detroit heading into Friday night's matchup, but his former organization wasn't as kind to him.
The Brewers tagged Olson for five runs, all earned, to open the scoring in the top of the second inning. Sal Frelick led off with a single, Rhys Hoskins doubled and both scored on Joey Ortiz's one-out single through a drawn-in infield. Blake Perkins made it 3-0 with a triple to right and then Brice Turang followed with a RBI flare to left.
A double-steal by Turang and Christian Yelich with runners on the corners and two outs led to the fifth and final run as Milwaukee batted through against Olson.
