Mike Tomlin agrees to extension with Steelers, now signed through 2021
The Pittsburgh Steelers are known for their stability at head coach — they’ve had just three since 1969.
That number doesn’t look like it will tick up to four in the near future.
Extension with Mike Tomlin
The team announced on Thursday that it has agreed to a one-year extension with Mike Tomlin, which means he is now signed through “at least the 2021 season.”
“I am pleased to announce we have extended Mike Tomlin’s contract through the 2021 season,” Steelers president Art Rooney II said in a statement. “Mike is one of the most successful head coaches in the National Football League, and we are confident in his leadership to continue to lead our team as we pursue our goal of winning another championship.”
Tomlin thanked the organization.
“I am very appreciative of this contract extension and opportunity and want to thank Art Rooney II and everyone in the organization for the support in my first 12 seasons,” he said. “We have a goal of winning the organization’s seventh Super Bowl championship, and I couldn’t be more excited about this upcoming season.”
Never had a losing season
Tomlin was hired on Jan. 22, 2007, making him the third-longest tenured coach in the NFL, behind New England’s Bill Belichick and New Orleans’ Sean Payton. Entering his 13th season, Pittsburgh has never posted a losing record on his watch, winning six AFC North titles and going to the playoffs eight times.
The Steelers won Super Bowl XLIII in just Tomlin’s second season, and returned to the Super Bowl two years later.
Now 47-years-old, Tomlin’s overall record as head coach is 125-66-1 (.654); he’s the eighth coach in league history to lead his team to 100 regular-season wins in his first 10 seasons.
