Mike Krzyzewski gave Lakers GM Rob Pelinka positive advice on LeBron James, JJ Redick

There has been plenty of angst among fans concerning the direction of the Los Angeles Lakers as LeBron James starts to near the end of his career. While he's still playing at a high level, there is a perception that the franchise is catering to every one of his whims instead of making rational moves that would result in championship contention.

The Lakers did not sign a single free agent to a standard contract or make any trades this summer. Instead, they took James' son Bronny in the second round of June's draft and hired JJ Redick, his friend and former podcast co-host, to be their head coach.

They did, however, consult with legendary retired Duke University head coach Mike Krzyzewski during their coaching search. He did tell general manager Rob Pelinka that James should be taken into consideration when it comes to making moves, but within reason.

Via ESPN:

"It was just about going into the last part of LeBron's career, how his legacy should be intertwined with what the team is doing," Krzyzewski told ESPN of his message to Pelinka. "I said it can't be the only thing that you're thinking of. But is there a way that you can help him in positioning him in different ways on offense? On defense?"

Krzyzewski coached James in the past when both were part of Team USA men's basketball. Krzyzewski also coached Redick when the latter played for Duke University in the 2000s.

In fact, the former coach felt Redick and Pelinka could collaborate well with each other.

"We've gotten that from a lot of people," Pelinka said. "When I huddled up with Mike at the Chicago combine, he was like, 'I really think you and JJ should work together. I've known you for over 20 years and I think you guys just see the game and see the business of basketball very similarly.'"

Krzyzewski also feels Redick and James can work well together.

"It's a long season. … I think they will have each other's back, and that's going to be essential," Krzyzewski said. "Especially in JJ's case. If they can keep growing that relationship, I think the players will see it too."

Only time will tell if Redick will be a good NBA head coach. But so far, players reportedly love what he has done during training camp and the preseason.
