Mike Gundy blames growing number of transfers on 'liberalism'
Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy has a lot to say about a lot of things. Take players transferring, for instance.
During his Monday press conference, the topic of OSU safety Thabo Mwaniki’s decision to leave the program came up. According to the Tulsa World, Gundy was asked about how much easier it is for players to transfer than it used to be.
From there, Gundy, who seems to believe that younger people will back down when faced with a challenge, launched into a rant that touched on “liberalism,” “snowflakes,” “millennials,” “entitlement” and plenty of other words that have been known to generate a reaction.

Characterizing a group of people with a broad brush and attributing it to “liberalism” seems unfair and mostly nonsensical, especially in the context of college football players transferring. All that was missing from that soliloquy was “fake news.”
Gundy is never shy to speak his mind
Gundy has had his share of press conference moments this year (and, of course, throughout his career). After Oklahoma State upset Texas, Gundy let us know how he feels about Twitter.
“I could give a rat’s ass about Twitter. It’s a platform for people who are sitting at home drawing an unemployment check sitting in front of a keyboard,” he said while adding a fart noise for emphasis.
“I just kind of felt like social media and Twitter is what is destroying this country anyway. So that’s how I feel about it. From politics to sports to whatever. Gives people a platform to bitch and then other people are like needling it and they’re sitting at home and they’re late on a payment. So, anyway, that’s how I feel.”
Gundy did not want media asking about transferring player
Earlier in the season, Oklahoma State faced widespread criticism when a media-relations staff member, at the behest of Gundy, told reporters not to ask questions about receiver Jalen McCleskey’s decision to leave OSU. Those reporters were told that players would not be available to the media for the rest of the season if they asked players questions about McCleskey leaving.
McCleskey transferred in the lead up to the Kansas game. Following that game, Gundy was asked about the decision not to allow questions about McCleskey. Things went back-and-forth for a few minutes, with both sides explaining their points of view, until Gundy got terse:
Reporter: We were told we could ask the question, but if we did, then we wouldn’t be able to talk to players for —
Gundy: Are we really gonna talk about this? We’re still having a good time. Can’t we just beat Kansas? Let’s get off of the stuff that drives this country and is taking it in the ground, which is garbage. Let’s talk about football. We don’t want to chase ambulances, man, let’s have some fun.
Meanwhile, on the field, Oklahoma State is on the heels of a one-point loss to rival Oklahoma, the No. 6 team in the country. Gundy, after a touchdown with 1:03 to go, decided to go for two and the lead instead of tying the score at 48-48 with an extra point. It backfired, and OSU dropped to 5-5 on the year.
Next on the schedule is No. 9 West Virginia before a trip to TCU to close out the regular season. The Cowboys need to win one of those two games to reach a bowl game for the 13th straight season.
