Miguel Cabrera's final game: Detroit Tigers legend has Hollywood ending to his career

Miguel Cabrera’s final game will be remembered for years in Detroit.

It does not matter that the legendary Detroit Tigers slugger was 0-for-3 with a walk on Sunday. The pageantry to celebrate Cabrera’s remarkable career in front of a sold out crowd at Comerica Park outweighed the Tigers' 5-2 win over the Cleveland Guardians.

Cabrera’s final moment as a pro baseball player came in the field as a defender. Though he spent the entire season, and started Sunday's game, as the designated hitter, Cabrera entered the field in the eighth inning as the first baseman to be honored one final time.

THE FINAL NUMBERS: Where Miguel Cabrera ranks among MLB and Tigers greats

His Tigers teammates did not take the field with Cabrera, allowing the Comerica Park fans to serenade the retiring superstar with adulation.

As if it were scripted, the first batter of the inning, Cleveland left fielder Steven Kwan, hit was a ground ball to the legend, who fielded it and made the play at first unassisted with his fists raised in the air.

The future Hall of Famer left the game after the play as Tigers fans tearfully cheered. Cabrera hugged his kids, manager A.J. Hinch and each teammate while making his way off the field. Before entering the dugout for the final time, Cabrera stopped and waved with both hands in the air to Detroit fans, tapped his heart then touched the dirt. He broke down in tears for the first time as he left the field for the final time ever.

"Thank you to the city of Detroit, the Tigers organization, my teammates," Cabrera said after the game. "I am sorry, there was a lot of pressure. It was the hardest game I've ever played in my career. ... I am going to miss you guys. I am going to miss this game."

Here is a breakdown of each of Cabrera’s at-bats in his final game as a Tiger:

Seventh inning: Cabrera walks on four straight pitches in final plate appearance

Cabrera faced a new pitcher, reliever Enyel De Los Santos, in his fourth plate appearance. Cabrera stepped into the box to a standing ovation from the crowd once again, but did not have the opportunity to put on a show.

De Los Santos missed inside with a fastball to start the at-bat 1-0. He then missed with a fastball low and away to make it 2-0, then inside again to make it 3-0. The crowd started booing De Los Santos after the third straight ball, but it didn’t make him throw a strike to Cabrera.

The fourth pitch was a fastball that missed high, giving Cabrera a four-pitch walk. Cabrera slowly jogged down the first base line to loud cheers from the Comerica Park crowd for the final time.

Fourth inning: Cabrera pops out to second base

For the second time early in the game, Cabrera entered the batter’s box with runners on first and second base, this time with two outs. Cabrera took Giolito’s inside fastball on the first pitch for a ball then chased a changeup low to make the count 1-1.

On the third pitch, Cabrera got underneath a high changeup out of the zone and popped it up behind second base for the fly out. Cabrera fell to 0-for-3 but put the ball in play for the first time.

Third inning: Cabrera strikes out on three fastballs

Cleveland starter Lucas Giolito bested Cabrera in his second at-bat again.

Giolito got a strike call on an inside fastball to start the count at 0-1. Cabrera whiffed on a changeup in the dirt to make it 0-2 then check-swung and went around on a high fastball to strike out again.

First inning: Cabrera strikes out in first at-bat

The crowd gave Cabrera a lengthy standing ovation as he made his way from the on-deck circle to the batter’s box. Cabrera’s kids introduced Cabrera and got him to crack a smile as he entered the box to hit.

Cabrera chased a slider in the dirt on the first pitch to fall behind 0-1. He took a changeup high and inside to even the count at 1-1 then fouled off another high changeup the next pitch to fall behind 1-2. Cabrera watched one slider in the dirt to move the count to 2-2 but chased the next slider that was low and outside to strike out.
