Michigan football will look to stay undefeated in Big Ten play on Saturday as the Wolverines aim to repeat as Big Ten champions.

And it will come against an opponent the Wolverines took down less than a year ago on the biggest stage in college football for its first national championship since 1997: Washington.

Saturday's meeting between No. 10 Michigan (4-1, 2-0 Big Ten) and Washington (3-2, 1-1) at Husky Stadium is not only a marquee game on the Week 6 docket in college football, but also a result of how conference realignment has turned last year's national championship matchup into a conference game.

Here's a look at the series history between Michigan and Washington:

Michigan-Washington series history

According to Michigan football's record books, Saturday's Big Ten matchup will be the 16th time both Michigan and Washington have played each other.

It will be the first time since the 2001 season that the Wolverines and Huskies have faced off at Husky Stadium, and the fifth time overall that Michigan has traveled to Washington. The programs have squared off against each other four times in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, with both teams winning two games each.

The Wolverines are 2-2 all-time against the Huskies when the game has taken place in Seattle, with those two losses coming in each of the last two trips.

Michigan record vs Washington

  • Series record: Michigan leads 10-5

  • Michigan's last win: 2024 (34-13)

  • Washington's last win: 2001 (23-18)

The Wolverines are 10-5 in their 15 previous matchups against the Huskies — including a win last season in the national championship game. However, Washington notes its record vs. the Wolverines is 9-5, as the Huskies have no record of playing the Wolverines in 1916 — counted by Michigan as a 66-7 victory that occurred on Nov. 4 in Ann Arbor.

Indeed, the Huskies' 1916 schedule has the Huskies playing to a 0-0 tie vs. Oregon in Eugene on Nov. 5, 1916.

The teams' first meeting — which both teams' record books have chronicled — occurred on Sept. 26, 1953, when the Wolverines shut out the Huskies 50-0 in Ann Arbor. Michigan and Washington's next three games were part of home-and-home series across the 1954, 1969, and 1970 seasons.

Michigan and Washington then met up in two Rose Bowl Games. The first came in 1978 when the Huskies held on for a 27-20 victory despite a late surge from the Wolverines. Michigan and Washington met again in 1981, with the Wolverines exacting revenge with a 23-6 win.

The two programs would meet seven more times prior to last season's national championship game, which included back-to-back Rose Bowl appearances in the 1991 and 1992 seasons.
