Michigan football's Jim Harbaugh delivers quirky postgame interview after Wolverines' CFP win

Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh watches from the sideline in the second quarter during the College Football Playoff national championship game against Washington at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas on Monday, Jan. 8, 2024.

On Monday night, and for the first time since 1997, Michigan was named national champions. And for the first time in the modern era of college football, the Wolverines are undisputed.

At the helm of the Wolverines was coach Jim Harbaugh, who has been unabashedly himself every step of the way this year, including during Michigan's 34-13 win over No. 2 Washington. That didn't change during the postgame festivities, in which he talked about the "story" of this Michigan team.

"It was a journey," Harbaugh said. "A spiritual journey. Just took counsel from God. The Holy Spirit. This team. Everybody. Unanimous support for each other. I ain't got a question. But my dad does."

Harbaugh then gave way to his father Jack, who talked through multiple confusing audio dumps on the ESPN broadcast.

"I have a question!" he exclaimed. "A question if I might! WHO. HAS IT BETTER THAN US?" He was met with a loud chant of "No-body."

The camera then cut back to Jim wearing Will Johnson's "turnoverbuffs," the Cartier Buffs the Michigan defense wears after causing a turnover.

"I just wanna say to my two great loves: My family at work — this team — and my family at home. I love you. I love you. Congratulations."

Harbaugh went on to talk about the significance of this season.

"15-0. This was a spectacular team. And I would just say there are over a hundred. Hundred. Michigan men that are on this team in uniform tonight. And what they've done for the last 372 days is amazing. They're champions. Simply known as national champions. Pull it down! Pull it down! We did that."

Harbaugh and Michigan were then presented the last CFP trophy of the four-team era by CFP executive director Bill Hancock. While a long offseason of speculation lies in wait for Harbaugh, Michigan, and Michigan fans, for this season he stayed. And for Monday night they were champions. Harbaugh's joy was palpable during the presentation. Even if it did manifest in the most Harbaugh way possible.
