Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel: Jaelan Phillips is being activated

MIAMI GARDENS -- Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel met with the media Monday to talk about the preseason-opening win over Atlanta and look forward to this weekend's game vs. Washington.

He began by announcing that edge rusher Jaelan Phillips will come off physically unable to perform today.

Phillips has been out since tearing his Achilles in the Black Friday game against the Jets.

"What I got to learn about Jaelan Phillips is he's a very capable, strong learner because this was a test of internal fortitude," McDaniel said. "When he got injured, there was momentum swinging in a positive regard. He was finding a different level of competence. He wants to be great in the worst way."

McDaniel admitted he feared Phillips would be "the No. 1 violator" in secretly doing more workouts than he was supposed to do.

More: Miami Dolphins' second-round pick Patrick Paul makes big (and we mean big) impression in debut

  • WR Odell Beckham Jr. is not expected to return this week but perhaps next week.

  • Says RB Jeff Wilson has shown "some of his best stuff" in this camp. And McDaniel worked him out in college.

  • On S Patrick McMorris, sixth-round pick: Says in non-padded situations, he has shown his technique is evolving well. Points out it's not easy to contribute as a rookie in the NFL, so his game needs to continue to develop. Praises McMorris' tackling. (McMorris led the Dolphins in tackles vs. Atlanta with eight.)

  • On OL Kion Smith, who is out for the season: Points out it will give opportunities to others but for Smith, "that was tough" to see. "I don't know how many offensive linemen we have, but it's more than we're able to keep on an NFL roster." Adds that Smith "was a guy we've learned to rely upon more and more."

  • McDaniel also mentioned he ran into Steph Curry in Orlando when the Warriors were visiting the Magic on March 27. They chatted for 5-10 minutes at the Four Seasons. "My wife got a picture of us having a conversation," McDaniel said. "I think he got a picture of us, but I was too rattled to ask for his phone number. So if he's listening to this press conference, get that picture. But yeah, it was pretty cool. He's the extreme version of everything I believe in, in training for athletics."

  • Linebackers have taken a hit. Cam Brown and Grayson Murphy have been placed on injured reserve and will miss the season.
