Mets fans could barely contain themselves as Steve Cohen answered their prayers
It would be extremely New York Mets for the best moment of a new decade to be a news conference, but for now it’s true. There is apparently plenty of reason to believe that will change in the near future.
New Mets owner Steve Cohen was officially introduced on Tuesday, and said a lot of things. Now the richest team owner in MLB, Cohen said he wasn’t in this to make money, he just wants to win. He said the team would spend. He praised the fans. Most importantly, he said he would be disappointed if the Mets didn’t win a World Series in the next three to five years.
For a fan base that has endured the Wilpon family for decades, an era of depressed payrolls, perplexing decisions, nepotistic hires, incessant micro-managing, scandal, bizarre incidents, more mentions of Bernie Madoff than you’d like, an annual exercise in fiscal humiliation, hostile infighting and a fan culture primarily defined by exhaustion, Tuesday was more than just a news conference to Mets fans.
It marked the beginning of a new era, a possibility of becoming the kind of titan that baseball teams in the New York market should be.
Cohen’s words could very well end up being hollow, but for now, they’re the roadmap upon which Mets fans are basing their expectations and trace directly toward a future that previously felt impossible under the Wilpons.
Mets fans react to Steve Cohen’s introduction
As that catharsis hit, Mets fans made no effort to hide their excitement about their new favorite billionaire.

As ownership styles go “decades-long subtweet of Jeff Wilpon” is well above the median.

In the span of one Steve Cohen press conference I've gone from accepting the fact that I will die without seeing the Mets win a World Series to expecting at least 5 titles before I die

My god, I can only begin to imagine the skeletons in this guy’s closet but I’ll take the big honking W here. https://t.co/DuXNBcP0vO

Observers also got a kick out of watching Mets fans fall over themselves as Cohen said groundbreaking things like “Winning is good” and “I will spend money to make this team better.”
I can’t imagine what #Mets fans are feeling right now watching Steve Cohen. They must think they’re dreaming this.

I cannot imagine an owner winning over his fan base more in the first week or so of his ownership. What the Mets do from here on out is way more important than what Cohen has done in the first week, but everything he says seems to be exactly what the Mets fans wanted to hear.

I'm listening to this Steve Cohen presser where it sounds like he's saying exactly what fans want to hear and getting a whole lot of "Dodger fans in 2012" memories over here

Quite the start for Steve Cohen. That was as pitch perfect an opening press conference as Mets fans could have asked for.
