Memphis' Ryan Silverfield on UNLV situation, NIL deals: 'All we want is some stability'

Memphis football has an open week, and that means there'll be recruiting trips for coach Ryan Silverfield and the rest of the staff.

It also means Silverfield can answer some of the bigger-picture issues facing college sports, many of which came up at his Monday press conference. And, specifically, the constant changes to recruiting calendars and rules each season.

"I'd love for it to be, 'This is what we're doing. Can we stick with this for a couple years?' " Silverfield said. "I think all we want is some stability and understanding what it is. Because that has not occurred."

Name, image and likeness deals have been a hot-button topic for the last few years, but last week's news at UNLV brought those conversations back to the forefront of the sport. Rebels starting quarterback Matthew Sluka announced last week he would not play the rest of season and take a redshirt because of "certain representations" that "were not upheld."

Silverfield said he expects to see similar things moving forward.

"I think we're going to see, over the next few weeks, there's going to be guys that are sitting out for teams and holding out, maybe for other opportunities, however it's disguised," he said.

NIL deals could become more regulated if the House v. NCAA settlement is approved. That settlement would create a revenue sharing system in college sports, and it would also have a major impact on things like roster sizes and scholarship limits.

The current football roster limit is 125, but that number would be reduced to 105 if the settlement is approved.

The Tigers (4-1) are off before heading to Tampa to face South Florida on Oct. 11.

"South Florida has 129 guys on their roster," Silverfield said. "If the NCAA comes out tomorrow and says starting in January, you're going to 105 and that's your max number, well I've got to start looking at my own roster. What's that look like. How is that managed? Are we going to be at 105 scholarships?"
