Memphis Grizzlies trade up, land Cam Spencer with 53rd pick in NBA draft

The Memphis Grizzlies are not playing around about adding shooters and Thursday was a busy day for the Grizzlies in the 2024 NBA draft.

After drafting Jaylen Wells with the 39th pick, the Grizzlies traded up to the 53rd selection, where they chose UConn guard Cam Spencer. The 53rd pick was made by the Detroit Pistons, but the pick was reportedly traded, according to ESPN, by the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Memphis gave up the 57th pick to move up in the draft.

Like Wells, Spencer was one of the top available shooters. He shot 41.7% on 3-pointers in five seasons. Spencer finished his college career at UConn, where he helped lead the Huskies to the national championship.

Spencer averaged 14.3 points per game and shot 44% on 3-pointers. He thrived in UConn's offense with non-stop movement and pressure on defenses.

Before spending his final season at UConn, Spencer played one year for Rutgers and three seasons at Loyola (Maryland). In five collegiate years, he only had one season where he shot below 40% on 3-pointers.

Spencer averaged more than three assists per game in each of his college seasons, and he finished this year with 4.9 rebounds per game. At 6-foot-4, Spencer isn't the tallest shooting guard, but his playing style should complement Ja Morant, Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr.

On Wednesday, Memphis chose Purdue center Zach Edey in the first round with the No. 9 pick.
