Memphis Grizzlies top NBA Summer League storylines from Zach Edey to GG Jackson

It’s officially time for Memphis Grizzlies basketball.

Summer league basketball, that is.

Ja Morant may not be throwing down tomahawk dunks or Desmond Bane splashing stepback 3-pointers, but the next three weeks will be the first time Memphis fans get to see the team’s newest additions. The Grizzlies will play three games in the Salt Lake City summer league Monday through Wednesday before heading to Las Vegas for four scheduled games, starting Friday.

The roster features a combination of young standouts from last season and rookie draft picks. On paper, Memphis should be one of the better rosters due to a combination of experienced talent and a rookie class that feature college basketball's most productive player and two promising shooters.

Here are three storylines to watch during summer league.

How much will Grizzlies' GG Jackson play in NBA Summer League?

Each year during summer league, there are second-year players who prove that they’re just too good to be on the floor, ultimately leading to them being shut down after a couple of appearances. GG Jackson could be one of those players.

Summer league will be an opportunity for Jackson to improve his efficiency as a scorer and playmaker. He averaged 14.6 points last season but only shot 42.8% from the field. He also only totaled 1.2 assists per game. Jackson’s shooting and assist numbers are points of emphasis, and summer league is a good opportunity for the second-team all-rookie selection to work on his game.

If Jackson makes summer league basketball too easy, he probably won't be suiting up for long.

Zach Edey’s first Grizzlies action

Zach Edey is expected to be an importance piece in Memphis, and a strong summer league performance can increase the confidence that he’s the man for the job. His scoring and touch offensively will be important, but Edey’s performance will be graded more on how he does in the dirty work areas. Screening, rebounding and defending in space are things the Grizzlies need their first-round pick to showcase in summer action.

Scotty Pippen Jr. running the show

One of the bright spots at the end of a disappointing Grizzlies season in 2023-24 was finding Scotty Pippen Jr. Memphis has the 35-year old Derrick Rose on its roster, but backup point guard depth is a question mark. Pippen can continue to strengthen the confidence in his game as he eventually pushes for a standard roster spot.

But Pippen’s performance is more than just about him. Summer league basketball can be chaotic since it’s a lot of players who haven’t played together, so having a point guard who can orchestrate things is vital. Pippen’s role will be to make the game easier for players like Edey and second-round Grizzlies selections Cam Spencer and Jaylen Wells.

Pippen showcased an ability to drive the basketball and find teammates in his 24 games with Memphis last season. His ability to set up his teammates will help the Grizzlies get a better grasp of how Wells, Spencer and Edey can fit alongside the team’s other top playmakers.
