Memphis Grizzlies sign former Lakers forward Wenyen Gabriel to 10-day contract

Recent injuries to the Memphis Grizzlies have led to a new roster addition. The team announced Friday that former Los Angeles Lakers forward Wenyen Gabriel was joining the Grizzlies on a 10-day contract.

Gabriel, 26, is a 6-foot-9 forward in his fifth season out of Kentucky. He's spent time with the Lakers, New Orleans Pelicans, Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings, Los Angeles Clippers and Brooklyn Nets. During the past two seasons with the Lakers, Gabriel shot 57.1% from the field in 87 appearances.

The Grizzlies recently announced Ziaire Williams would be re-evaluated in four weeks due to a right hip flexor strain, and Derrick Rose will be re-evaluated in three weeks because of a groin injury. The length of those injuries combined with other long-term Grizzlies absences allows Memphis to use a hardship exception to sign a player to a 10-day contract.

Jaylen Nowell, Trey Jemison, Shaq Harrison, Jordan Goodwin and Matthew Hurt have all played with the Grizzlies this season on a 10-day hardship deal.

Gabriel was noted as a potential stretch forward who can play minutes at center when he left Kentucky. While he's flashed the shooting stroke, he's made only 31.9% of his 3-pointers in his NBA career. He's expected to provide depth to a Grizzlies frontcourt that has been lacking in size off the bench.

WHAT'S NEXT: Will injured Derrick Rose and Ziaire Williams return next season for Memphis Grizzlies?

Memphis (22-41) is back in action Friday against the Atlanta Hawks. Gabriel's 10-day contract should expire after the March 16 game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
