Memphis Grizzlies reshuffle assistant coaching staff with six new hires

The Memphis Grizzlies have made drastic changes to their coaching staff, bringing in six new assistants and retaining two from last season.

Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins will only have Patrick St. Andrews and Anthony Carter as holdovers from the 2023-24 staff. Carter and Andrews were both hired before last season, while the other previous members of the staff were longer tenured assistants.

Andrews was hired with the goal of helping Memphis overhaul its halfcourt offense. The Grizzlies have been one of the best transition offenses in the NBA under Jenkins, but they struggled in each of their playoff series generating offense in the halfcourt.

Carter came from the Miami Heat and has received praise from several Grizzlies players. Rookie GG Jackson notably credited Carter for what he felt was the best year shooting 3-pointers in his basketball career.

Who's in?

Memphis is adding Joe Boylan, Toumas Iisalo, Noah LaRoche, Jason March and Erick Schmidt and Patrick Mutombo to the staff. March was the coach for the G League Memphis Hustle and played a significant role in the development of key Grizzlies.

Boylan served as an assistant coach with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He also previously worked with the Grizzlies from 2015-18 as a player development coach on the staffs of Dave Joerger and David Fizdale.

Joining the Grizzlies assistant coaching staff will be LaRoche's first NBA assistant job, but he has trained several NBA players and garnered a reputation for player development. He has been instrumental to players like Russell Westbrook, Georges Niang, Harrison Barnes and Duncan Robinson.

Iisalo is joining Memphis after becoming a rising star in European basketball. He led Paris Basketball to new heights this season by winning the Leaders Cup and EuroCup championship in the LNB Pro A, which is the top division in France.

Like March, Schmidt has spent time in the Grizzlies organization and worked closely with players in practices.

Mutombo is a former assistant coach for four different NBA franchises. He was most recently on the staff for the Milwaukee Bucks.

Who is out?

Blake Ahearn, Brad Jones, Scoonie Penn, Sonia Raman and Vitaly Potapenko have all been replaced.

Ahearn served as an assistant coach for five seasons with Jenkins. He worked closely with several players, namely Ja Morant, with shooting among other things. Jones was an assistant for six seasons and stepped in as interim coach during the 2021-22 season when Jenkins and former lead assistant Darko Rajakovic were out with COVID-19 symptoms.

Penn worked closely with guards, Potapenko was mostly influential with the bigs on the roster and Raman had a key role in scout, film and analytics.
