Memphis Grizzlies are planning an expanded offensive role for rookie GG Jackson. Here's how

Memphis Grizzlies forward GG Jackson has been a bright spot during the team’s recent struggles, but he hasn’t even played the role that got him to the NBA yet.

That's expected to change. Before the Grizzlies fell 101-95 on Friday night to the Los Angeles Clippers, coach Taylor Jenkins declared that more opportunity is on the way for the talented rookie.

"I think over time in the next couple of weeks, me trying to put the ball in his hands a little bit more," Jenkins said. "Rather than him being a secondary creator, maybe a little bit more of a primary creator."

Basketball fans and players see the same thing on the floor. The only difference, according to Grizzlies guard Derrick Rose, is that he has a closer viewpoint.

Two lockers down from Rose is Jackson. Now that he might play a role similar to the one Rose has his entire career, expect the veteran to push the rookie.

“He got to get used to dribbling the ball with the same confidence that he had in high school and in college,” Rose said.

And when Jackson doesn't show that confidence, he'll hear from Rose.

“Aye bruh, your scary (expletive) gone dribble the ball or what?” Rose said, giving an example of motivating Jackson.

Jackson scored 11 points in Friday’s loss. He made four of his nine shots. Five of those were 3-point attempts.

He has shot the ball better than at any point of his basketball life, but operating as a spot-up shooter has never been high up on his tasks until this season. Even when he was with the Memphis Hustle in the G League, he was allowed to create more off the dribble.

"I feel like they put a lot of trust in me and they see the confidence in my game," Jackson said. "Sometimes I'll pull like a 30-footer or a 40-footer out of nowhere, but I got to continue to work on that. I got to tighten up my handles because if you're going to have me in that position, I can't lose the ball."

Handling the ball more will put Jackson in situations to showcase his playmaking. It’s one of the areas where the Grizzlies want to see more improvement. He has more turnovers (22) than assists (19) this season.

Even though Jackson will get a bigger opportunity in a creator role, his rotation spot likely won't change.

"We'll figure out what the role is," Jenkins said. "I anticipate him still coming off the bench right now. He's found kind of a sweet spot there. The scoring punch off the bench has given us good balance with our starting unit."

If and when Jackson becomes a starter, his defense will be the reason why.

"How is he going to continue to lock in on game plans?" Jenkins said. "Guard different positions — ballhandlers, creators, guys off the ball. The discipline there, the consistency that he has to consistently show."

Jackson will be the latest in a long line of Grizzlies players under Jenkins who have been given expanded offensive roles after initially not having the ball in their hands much. Desmond Bane may be the best example, but Ziaire Williams, Luke Kennard and Vince Williams Jr. are all part of that as well.

“He’s crazy enough to be here," Rose said. "You got to be kind of crazy. He’s got the attitude, he’s got the chips. But it’s about putting it all together.”
