Memphis Grizzlies' offense squashed by Orlando Magic in 30-point blowout road loss
Teams often come out slow or sluggish on the second night of a back to back, but that wasn't the case with the Orlando Magic on Saturday. The Memphis Grizzlies had been hoping to take advantage, but the Magic dominated from the start and Memphis had no answers, trailing by as many as 43 points in a 118-88 loss at the Kia Center in Orlando.
The Grizzlies (24-50) struggled to get anything going on offense. GG Jackson was the first to reach double figures in scoring, and he didn't do so until midway through the third quarter. Jaren Jackson Jr. finished with four points and made 1-of-9 shots. Those offensive struggles created easier scoring opportunities for the Magic.
Orlando (43-31) had a balanced performance on Saturday. Four of its starters finished in double figures, as did three reserves.
Here are some takeaways from Saturday's game.
Another new Memphis Grizzlies lineup
Luke Kennard made his return after missing the past five games for the birth of his child, but now the Grizzlies were without Desmond Bane. Santi Aldama also missed Saturday's game, and that cleared the way for Jake LaRavia to get his second start of the season, and the Grizzlies to unveil their 45th starting lineup.
Finding cohesiveness while using different lineups is always tough, but it gets even more difficult against a defense the caliber of Orlando's. Memphis struggled to get any rhythm.
Top-ranked defenses collide. Advantage: Orlando
Of all the Grizzlies' struggles this season, defense hasn't been a major one. They are ranked 11th in defensive rating, but the Magic have been even better. Their second-rated defense made Saturday one of the few times Memphis faced a defense better than its own. The Magic held Memphis to just 13 points in the first quarter. They led 41-13 before the Grizzlies scored again. At that point of the game, they were shooting 19%.
It's no surprise that the Grizzlies' offense struggled against a top defensive team. While defense takes talent as well, energy and effort are just as important. Memphis has a lot of energy and effort, but that doesn't matter as much on offense. Injuries to Bane, Ja Morant and Marcus Smart took away three of the Grizzlies' best creators.

The pain won't last forever
The Grizzlies have gotten blown out and suffered more than their share of bad losses since the All-Star break. Saturday's beatdown by the Magic is up near the top. After winning more than 50 games in each of the past two seasons, Memphis is now at 50 losses in a single season. And this game was ugly.
There weren't many positive notes in this game. The biggest positive? This storm won't last forever. Memphis will limp its way through the rest of the regular season with the possibility of a couple of injured players returning and a lottery pick secured. After that, hope should be restored that this team, when it's healthy again. could return to the conversation of Western Conference relevancy.
What's next
Memphis will go on the road for a game Monday against the Detroit Pistons. This will be the first of two meetings between the Pistons and Grizzlies during the next week.
