Memphis Grizzlies' late comeback attempt falls short against new-look Raptors

The hole was too big to overcome.

The Memphis Grizzlies played with urgency in the fourth quarter while attempting to come back from a 20-point deficit against the Toronto Raptors. Memphis got within four points, but Toronto responded each time.

Memphis dropped the second night of its home back-to-back 116-111 on Wednesday night at FedExForum.

Ja Morant led the Grizzlies (11-23) with 28 points. This was the first time the Grizzlies have ever lost with Morant, Bane and Jackson each topping 20 points.

Toronto (14-20) was led by Immanuel Quickley's 26 points.

Here are some observations from the game.

Grizzlies make starting lineup change

The starting center position has been the biggest question mark now that the Grizzlies are close to full health. Marcus Smart, Ja Morant, Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr. make up a strong quartet, but centers haven't yielded the same production. Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins shifted Xavier Tillman Sr. to the starting lineup on Wednesday night after Bismack Biyombo had started 25 of his first 27 games with the Grizzlies.

Ja Morant, Desmond Bane stats vs. Raptors

Morant and Bane scored half of the Grizzlies' 48 points in the first half as the team trailed by 14 points. Both players were good in the second half, but the lack of production from the rest of the team hurt the Grizzlies. Jackson was inefficient as a scorer, while Smart and Tillman didn't give Memphis much offensively. The Grizzlies' bench had combined for 14 points going into the fourth quarter when Memphis trailed by 17 points.

Memphis went on a 19-6 run in the fourth quarter when Jackson and Ziaire Williams gave the Grizzlies a major boost. Williams scored 10 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter and Jackson had 13 of his 24 in the final period. When Bane and Morant got help, the Grizzlies thrived, but the assistance came too late.

Along with Morant's 28 points, he added nine assists and eight rebounds.

Marcus Smart's injured hand impacting shooting

Smart was shaking his taped left hand early in the first half as it appeared to be bothering him. The Grizzlies wing recently spoke about how a round wound on the palm of his left hand from a Dec. 26 game against the New Orleans Pelicans has been bothering him. Smart missed all five of his shot attempts in the first half. When he came back to the court in the second half, his left hand was no longer taped.

Smart's first basket came with 6:32 left in the third quarter

What's next

The Grizzlies are heading out west for a three-game road trip, starting with the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday (9 p.m., ESPN). Memphis lost its first meeting against the Lakers 134-107 on Nov. 14.
