Memphis football releases initial depth chart of 2024 season: See our takeaways

Memphis football released its first depth chart of the 2024 season on Monday morning — providing the first definitive look at how offseason position battles have played out ahead of the season opener.

The Tigers open their season against North Alabama on Saturday (6 p.m., ESPN+) at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. They'll do it with a remade offensive line, which is expected to feature a new starter at each position. That includes transfers Chris Adams (Old Dominion), Trent Holler (Marshall) and Keydrell Lewis (Louisiana-Monroe), who were all listed as starters on the depth chart.

There's also news about position battles in the secondary, defensive line and backup quarterback. Here are our takeaways from the initial depth chart.

A revamped offensive line

Adams appears to have beat out South Carolina transfer Jaylen Nichols for the starting left tackle spot, which is notable considering Adams only arrived after spring practices. Holler will start at center, while Hill will shift to left guard after playing a variety of positions last season.

Gambill shifts to left guard after playing on the right side last season and playing some center in the spring. Lewis won the job for right tackle.

Harris Boyd wins backup QB job

Boyd had been in a three-way competition with freshman Arrington Maiden and redshirt junior Cade Cunningham to back up Seth Henigan. Boyd, a redshirt freshman from Rowlett, Texas, did enough during the offseason to win that spot.

Boyd did not appear in a game during his true freshman season in 2023. He's now a snap away from playing for the Tigers, though. And it's possible he could see game action on Saturday if the Tigers are cruising to a blowout win.

The "or" appears at running back. What does it mean?

Sutton Smith and Mario Anderson were both listed together at running back. Anderson, who was South Carolina's leading rusher a season ago, has been projected as one of Memphis' most-impactful transfers this season.

But Smith has been with the Tigers since 2022 and has flashed game-breaking potential. Coaches have talked about trying to get him more involved, and he could be in line for a more significant rushing workload in 2024.

Plenty of new faces on defense

Up front, redshirt junior William Whitlow Jr. and Louisiana-Monroe transfer Javon Denis are listed as defensive end starters, while Indiana transfer Patrick Lucas Jr. is listed as the starter on the interior.

Fellow Indiana transfer Kobee Minor is one of the starting cornerbacks, with Davion Ross back from injury and set to start on the other side. Akron transfer AJ Watts is listed as a starter at safety along with An'Darius Coffey, while Greg Rubin will play the hybrid "TIGER" role.
