Memphis basketball's Carl Cherenfant enters transfer portal after one season

Another member of the Memphis basketball team will soon hit the transfer portal.

Guard Carl Cherenfant submitted the necessary paperwork Tuesday and will leave the Tigers after one season under coach Penny Hardaway, according to an athletic department spokesperson. The Pompano Beach, Florida, native appeared in 18 games as a true freshman. But he played more than seven minutes just once − a 16-minute outing at SMU on Feb. 18.

Cherenfant scored 10 points and had 17 rebounds in 4.4 minutes per game. He committed to the Tigers in October 2022, becoming part of a high school recruiting class that included Mikey Williams, JJ Taylor and Ashton Hardaway.

Memphis is undergoing another significant roster overhaul this offseason. Last year, Hardaway lost 13 players either to expired eligibility or transfer.

This time around, seven Tigers on the roster are out of eligibility and two others (Jonathan Pierre and Jayhlon Young) have already entered the portal. Forward Nicholas Jourdain has publicly expressed a desire to return for the 2024-25 season. But the futures of others, like David Jones, Ashton Hardaway and Joe Cooper, are unclear at this point.
