How Memphis basketball Tigers like David Jones and Emoni Bates performed at NBA summer league
The Memphis Grizzlies finished the 2024 NBA summer league with the runner-up prize, falling to the Miami Heat in overtime and bringing an end to two-plus weeks of basketball.
While the Grizzlies did the Bluff City proud, the 901 was also well represented by a host of former Memphis basketball standouts and stars. All told, nine former Tigers — all of whom played under coach Penny Hardaway — were on summer league rosters, and eight of them received some amount playing time.
Here is a rundown of the former Memphis Tigers and how each of them performed.
David Jones, Philadelphia 76ers
The lefty from the Dominican Republic, Jones' NBA career got off to a bit of a slow start, but he finished with a flourish.
On Sunday, Jones dropped 23 points, eight rebounds and two steals for the Sixers in a 103-98 win over the Boston Celtics.
In seven summer league games, Jones averaged 9.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.7 steals per contest.
On Monday, the Sixers formally announced they had signed Jones to a two-way contract.

Nae'Qwan Tomlin, Cleveland Cavaliers
The long forward, who spent only part of one season at Memphis after helping lead Kansas State on a deep NCAA Tournament run in 2023, played in all five games for the Cavs in Las Vegas.
Tomlin averaged 18 minutes per game, putting up 7.0 points and 2.4 rebounds per game.
Jaykwon Walton, Oklahoma City Thunder
Walton played only one season at Memphis after spending time at Georgia and Wichita State. The wing got spare playing time with the Thunder this month, getting into one game and registering 3.5 minutes with no stats to show for it.
Kendric Davis, Portland Trail Blazers
Coming off a nice season in the G League with the Santa Cruz Warriors, the former Tigers point guard (who also played at SMU and TCU) averaged 3.0 points, 3.3 assists and 1.7 rebounds in three games for Portland.
Last week, Davis signed a one-year deal with the Adelaide 36ers of Australia's NBL.
Emoni Bates, Cleveland Cavaliers
Bates, once viewed as a can't-miss super prospect, was a second-round draft pick of the Cavs in 2023. After playing 18 games at Memphis as a true freshman, Bates finished his collegiate career at Eastern Michigan.
In four games in Vegas, Bates averaged a team-best 16.3 points per game to go along with 3.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.
Josh Minott, Minnesota Timberwolves
The forward, who was one-and-done at Memphis (he was part of Hardaway's No. 1 recruiting class in 2021, along with Bates and Detroit Pistons center Jalen Duren), was second among all Timberwolves with 15.8 points and 6.8 rebounds in five summer league games.
D.J. Jeffries, Memphis Grizzlies
The Memphis native who was part of Hardaway's first No. 1 recruiting class in 2019, finished his career at Mississippi State last season.
Jeffries got into just one game in Salt Lake City, logging 2 points and 1 rebound in 9.4 minutes.

Boogie Ellis, Sacramento Kings
Ellis also was a member of the vaunted 2019 signing class, which also included Jeffries, Indiana Pacers center James Wiseman, New York Knicks forward Precious Achiuwa and free agent guard Lester Quinones.
After finishing his career at USC, he signed with the Kings. In five games, he averaged 10.0 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists.
Damion Baugh, New York Knicks
The guard from Nashville was also part of the 2019 Memphis signing class. After two seasons, Baugh transferred to TCU, where he finished his career in 2023.
In five summer league games for the Knicks, Baugh averaged 9.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 1.8 steals.
