Memphis basketball releases 2024-25 AAC schedule, will start conference play at FAU
Memphis basketball, after what figures to be a grueling non-conference schedule, will open AAC play on the road against FAU on Jan. 2.
The Tigers, as well as the Memphis women's basketball team, released their respective full, 18-game conference slates Thursday, although tip-off times and broadcast plans have still not been finalized.
The first AAC home game for the men is set for Jan. 5, when North Texas comes to FedExForum.
Last season, Memphis got off to a blistering 15-2 start, rising as high as No. 10 in the Associated Press Top 25 in late January. But coach Penny Hardaway's team stumbled badly down the stretch, losing eight of its last 15 games and missing the NCAA Tournament.
The Tigers' daunting non-conference schedule will be at least as important as it has ever been. That's because the AAC, which has been a two-bid NCAA Tournament league each of the last four seasons, is projected to be significantly weaker.
FAU, which received an at-large March Madness berth last season, said goodbye to coach Dusty May and most of its star players this offseason. South Florida won the regular-season AAC title last season, but lost the bulk of its firepower to the transfer portal.
The only teams besides Memphis (which is 32nd) inside BartTorvik.com's top 100 T-Rank projections are UAB (No. 82), North Texas (No. 87) and Wichita State (No. 100). The Tigers host UAB on Jan. 26 and make the trip to Birmingham, Alabama, on March 2.
