Memphis basketball falls out of the top 25 after third consecutive loss
The Memphis basketball team, after six weeks in the national polls, is out of both the AP Top 25 and the USA TODAY Sports Coaches polls.
Back-to-back-to-back losses has a way of swaying the overall opinion. The Tigers (15-5, 4-3 AAC), after demoralizing setbacks versus South Florida and Tulane, lost 97-88 Sunday at UAB. The skid has undone much of the good work Memphis did up to this point, which included a 10-game winning streak with wins over the likes of Clemson, Texas A&M and Virginia.
Coach Penny Hardaway's team received votes in both polls, enough to essentially be slotted at 28th (AP) and 30th (coaches). The Tigers have either received votes or been ranked in both polls each week all season.
Memphis need not expend as much energy on its place within the national landscape. Rather, the Tigers have more important things to worry about presently. Nearly halfway through the conference portion of the schedule, there are five teams ahead of the team in the league standings. FAU, Charlotte and South Florida have only one loss apiece, while UAB and North Texas have two.
