Jaykwon Walton will continue his college basketball career at Memphis.

The 6-foot-7 senior wing, who had signed with UCF in May, was on the practice floor Thursday morning at the Laurie-Walton Family Basketball Center. The Tigers are preparing for a three-game exhibition tour Aug. 1-7 in the Dominican Republic.

Walton spent last season at Wichita State, where he led the Shockers in scoring (13.9 points per game) and averaged 5.3 rebounds a game. Walton, a former standout performer for Memphis-based AAU program Team Thad, joins a robust list of transfers coach Penny Hardaway has added this offseason. Eight in all, the group is highlighted by former Alabama point guard Jahvon Quinerly, former Florida State guard Caleb Mills and former Louisiana center Jordan Brown.

Memphis has one open scholarship remaining. The school recently submitted a request for reconsideration on behalf of forward DeAndre Williams. If it's successful, he would take that scholarship.

Walton was recruited by Hardaway to be part of what eventually became the country's No. 1 recruiting class in 2019. Hardaway also said Walton, upon entering the transfer portal after last season, approached Memphis about linking up. But the timing didn't work out, and Walton committed to Alabama. The program disassociated itself from Walton, however, after he was arrested and charged with second-degree possession of marijuana in Tuscaloosa in April. He was released on $500 bond.

Walton subsequently signed with UCF in May but joined Memphis this week.

“It’s just one of those situations where he just wanted to be in Memphis," Hardaway said Thursday. "He just wanted to be a Tiger. It wasn’t any recruitment really. Just him wanting to be here, our history of knowing each other and him feeling like this was a good situation for him.”

Hardaway said Walton's legal troubles are in the rearview mirror.

“He didn’t get charged with anything, so he’s all good to go,” Hardaway said.

Walton brings an element to the table the current roster was largely lacking: 3-point shooting. The Columbus, Ga., native shot 40% beyond the arc (42-for-105) in his only season at Wichita State. He also connected on 63.1% of his 2-point field goal attempts, best in the American Athletic Conference.

In two meetings against the Tigers last season, he averaged 14.5 points, 3.5 assists and 3.0 rebounds in 37 minutes, was 11-for-16 from the floor (2 of 6 from 3-point range) and 5-for-6 at the free-throw line.

Following a decorated high school career at G.W. Carver-Montgomery (Ala.), Walton signed with Georgia. After playing in seven games as a true freshman, he left the Bulldogs two games into his sophomore season. He spent one season at Shelton State (Ala.) Community College before suiting up at Wichita State in 2022-23.

Memphis will play one game in Santo Domingo (6:30 p.m., Wednesday) and two in La Romana (5 p.m., Aug. 4, and 4 p.m., Aug. 6).
