Mavericks trade up for No. 3 pick, Luka Doncic in last-minute deal with Hawks
The Atlanta Hawks and the Dallas Mavericks — who were reportedly struggling to finish a deal in recent days leading up to Thursday’s NBA draft at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn — finally got it done.
Dallas and Atlanta traded the No. 3 and No. 5 picks in the NBA draft on Thursday night, sending Euroleague star Luka Doncic to the Mavericks.
Along with the fifth pick in the draft, the Mavericks will also send the Hawks their 2019 protected first-round pick in the deal.

The Mavericks then drafted Oklahoma guard Trae Young with the No. 5 pick in the draft, who will be sent to the Hawks to complete the trade.

The move for the Mavericks could play out well, as Doncic is widely considered one of the best European prospects in recent history. And with Dirk Nowitzki entering his 21st season in the NBA, and on the verge of retirement, the Mavericks could start to build their franchise around the 19-year-old Real Madrid star.
