What Matthew Murrell, Jaemyn Brakefield said about their Ole Miss basketball futures

OXFORD ― Ole Miss basketball will play its final scheduled home game when it hosts Texas A&M on Saturday. For Allen Flanigan, Jamarion Sharp and walk-on Cole McGrath, it will mark their final regular-season game inside the SJB Pavilion.

Other seniors, like Jaemyn Brakefield and Matthew Murrell, have eligibility remaining should they choose to use it thanks to the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Murrell indicated that he won't return.

"This will be my last home game in the Pavilion," he said. "I'm grateful for what the Ole Miss community has done for me for the four years I've been here. I'm grateful for the support they've had for me through the ups and downs. I just thank them for everything."

Murrell has turned into an upper-echelon SEC guard this season under coach Chris Beard. He's averaged 16.5 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists while shooting 47% from the field and 41% from 3-point range.

Brakefield's response was different.

"This won't be my last home game," he said. "But yeah, I'm grateful to be at Ole Miss, and just to be alive. God woke me up this morning, I'm just grateful for that. This year has been wonderful seeing the Pavilion turn out to what it's been this year. This team, going through all the ups and downs, we're at where we're at, and I'm grateful to have this group of guys around me."

Brakefield, a native of Jackson who transferred to Ole Miss from Duke before the 2021-22 season, has posted a career-high 12.6 points per game to go with 4.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists.

GEORGIA RECAP: With Matthew Murrell sidelined, Ole Miss basketball suffers damaging loss at Georgia

The lone scenario that would see the Rebels play home games beyond their game with Texas A&M on Saturday (1 p.m., CBS) is if they accept an NIT bid.

With the NCAA Tournament looking increasingly unlikely, Beard was asked on Wednesday whether Ole Miss would play in the NIT if invited and did not provide a direct answer.

"The only thing we're thinking about is 1:00 Saturday and Texas A&M," he said.
