Mason Graham injury update: Michigan stud DT will be available vs. Fresno State

Michigan football will have star defensive tackle Mason Graham available for its season opener on Saturday against Fresno State (7:34 p.m., NBC).

That wasn't seen as something that needed to be clarified Monday morning, when U-M head coach Sherrone Moore said the team's health was "rocking" after he was asked about his team's 2024 season debut.

However, Graham apparently had been "banged up" throughout camp, per his defensive coordinator Wink Martindale on the “Inside Michigan Football” radio show Monday evening.

A source with knowledge of the injury didn't want to disclose specifics, but told the Free Press on Tuesday that Graham "will be playing."

In the evening, Graham, a junior, was one of a handful of Michigan players made available to preview the season opener. He declined to provide injury specifics, but said "I feel good" and was just "dealing with some stuff," described it as day to day.

"I was full speed today, so just doing everything I can," Graham continued Tuesday. "Yeah (I plan on playing)."

Graham, who spent the offseason training with the "sack sensei" Javon Gopie, enters 2024 as a preseason All-American and widely pegged to be selected in the top 10 in nearly every 2025 NFL mock draft.

Since his arrival in Ann Arbor, Graham has been a force in the trenches, playing in 27 games with 15 starts as an underclassman. Pro Football focus named him a Freshman All-American, before the Servite High School standout took his game to the next level as a sophomore.

Last season, Graham recorded 36 tackles including 7½ for loss and three sacks, to go with three quarterback hurries, one pass breakup, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery despite missing two weeks with a broken bone in his hand, then playing with a club on his hand for multiple weeks after his return, which he said Tuesday might still be the best game of his career.

"I was ready to get back," he laughed.

Time will tell if he's as eager on Saturday.
