Marshall coach Charles Huff: Ohio State 'probably the best team I've seen on film, ever'

Ohio State has been routinely lauded as the most talented team in college football this season, with a star-studded roster carrying national-championship-or-bust expectations.

For the coach of the Buckeyesnext opponent, the praise goes beyond even that.

During a news conference previewing his team’s game this weekend, Marshall coach Charles Huff said Ohio State is “probably the best team I’ve seen on film, ever,” a compliment that he asserted is more than just a coach of a nearly 40-point underdog trying to manage expectations.

“I’m not just saying that to get everybody excited,” Huff said. “They’re really good.”

He went on to say the 2024 Buckeyes are better than the 2011 national championship Alabama team that Huff went against while an assistant coach at Vanderbilt. That Crimson Tide team had 27 future NFL players on its roster. Huff also coached at Alabama from 2019-20.

Coach Ryan Day’s team entered the season with lofty expectations, with the No. 2 ranking in the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll and with seven of the 22 offensive and defensive players on the USA TODAY Sports Network preseason All-Big Ten first team.

While Ohio State returned plenty of stars, it bolstered its roster in the transfer portal with key additions such as safety Caleb Downs (Alabama), running back Quinshon Judkins (Ole Miss), quarterback Will Howard (Kansas State) and center Seth McLaughlin (Alabama).

In July, new Buckeyes athletic director Ross Bjork told Yahoo Sports that Ohio State players earned “around $20 million” from donor-led collectives and brand affiliates.

It has been noticeable on the field thus far, with the Buckeyes outscoring their first two opponents, Akron and Western Michigan, by a combined 108-6 margin.

“When you look across the board, I’m not saying every player is the best player in the country, but collectively, they have a really good, fast, explosive, physical football team,” Huff said. “You kind of look at what they’ve done to build their team, $20 million in NIL resources invested into this team. They’ve been able to go out and acquire some of the best talent in the country.”
