Behind a huge performance from Kam Jones, the Marquette men's basketball team topped Western Kentucky, 87-69, in the first round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament to advance in the March Madness bracket.
The Golden Eagles will play Colorado in the second round in the South Region on Sunday. Shaka Smart's team was tested and trailed by seven at halftime, but outscored the Hilltoppers by 25 points in the second half to run away with the victory over the Conference USA tournament champions at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
Here's how the game unfolded in reverse chronological order with score updates and highlights.
Marquette basketball final stats vs. Western Kentucky
Kam Jones shines in the first round of the NCAA Tournament if anyone needed to be reminded.
Last year in this round, Jones had 18 second-half points to propel the Golden Eagles to a victory over Vermont. This year, he did it again. He scored 18 of his game-high 28 points in the second half to rally Marquette past Western Kentucky in the 2024 opener of March Madness. He was magnificent, hitting 10 of 16 shots, including five big three-pointers.
Tyler Kolek, playing in his first game since he injured his oblique Feb. 28, had 18 points and was an efficient 7 of 13 from the field to go with 11 assists.
Stevie Mitchell and David Joplin came to life in the second half and each finished in double figures.
Mitchell had 16 points on 6 of 9 shooting and was especially aggressive on defense with three steals and provided plenty of energy to spark the Golden Eagles.

Marquette vs Western Kentucky prediction, game picks
Marquette is a heavy favorite as a No. 2 seed and you probably won't find many March Madness brackets picking the upset. Marquette, though banged up with injuries, is experienced and motivated after bowing out in the second round of last year's NCAA Tournament. Western Kentucky needed to win its conference tournament to qualify for March Madness.
Journal Sentinel's Marquette beat reporter Ben Steele writes that "this game is about the Golden Eagles getting back into a flow with Kolek on the court. It might be tougher than expected for MU, but there's enough edge in talent to push MU into the second round."

Marquette vs Western Kentucky injury updates
Tyler Kolek is the player everyone wants to know about. Marquette's two-time All-American point guard hasn't played since suffering an oblique injury Feb. 28 against Providence. The senior missed the team's final three regular season games and then the Golden Eagles' three Big East tournament games.
Head coach Shaka Smart said Kolek will play on Friday.
Marquette forward Oso Ighodaro is also one to watch. The 6-foot-11 senior banged knees in Marquette's loss to UConn in the Big East tournament title game last Saturday. He departed with about seven minutes left in the game and didn't return, but he should be a full-go for the NCAA Tournament.
