The Sooners — who opened up WCWS play on Friday, May 17 at 7 p.m. CT against Cleveland State — brought the second best batting average in the country (.372) into the postseason, led by Kinzie Hansen's team-leading .421 average. As for success inside the circle, Kelly Maxwell, Kierston Deal and Nicole May are as good of a pitching staff as there is in the country.

Here's what you need to know about the Sooners history in the Women's College World Series:

How many Women's College World Series does Oklahoma have?

Oklahoma has eight Women's College World Series titles. The Sooners have won each of the last four and seven in the last 12 years. Despite the Sooners' success in recent seasons, they don't have the most Women's College World Series titles in college softball — they are tied for second.

Following into the 2024 NCAA softball tournament, two Pac-12 teams rank first and tied for second in titles won: UCLA (12), and Arizona (eight). The Bruins won three of the first four Women's College World Series titles from 1982-85 before winning four of five 1988-92. UCLA won two more in 1995 and 1999 before the turn of the century (though the latter was later vacated), to give them eighth and ninth in program history — a mark that has yet to be surpassed by any other team.

Arizona State and Oklahoma are the closest teams to UCLA in terms of all-time WCWS titles, with eight. The Wildcats were a veritable powerhouse in the sport in the early '90s, not only winning five championships from 1991 through 1997, but also finishing as runners up in the two seasons they didn't win the national championship in 1992 and 1995.
